I sat up. I didn’t realise I’d laid myself down. Astonished pale faces with wide eyes, looked at me. Seb was in front of me, rubbing my hand. He smiled and I tried to return it, but my lips couldn’t move.

“It’s okay, it’ll be okay,” he mouthed to me.

I smiled as best as I could as wet, silent tears ran down my face.

“How did she die?” I blurted, a whimper escaped from my lips. I didn’t turn to look at Clay, but kept my eyes on Seb.

“A demon killed her.” I turned to the voice. It was Clay, but he sounded different. Annoyed... possibly.

“I mean, howdid the demon kill her? What method.”

“You don’t need to know.”

“I need to know everything,” I replied slow and calm, rubbing at the pain in my temples. I got why Clay was trying to protect me, but sometimes he didn’t understand.

Ryan pushed a straw that led to a glass of water towards my lips. “Take a sip.” I glanced up at Ryan and smiled weakly, and sucked in the cool water.

My father would have understood, he would have brought me back, and he would have detailed every little thing to me.

“I need to know the methods in which they prefer to kill because when the next one comes, I could be the victim. I am the intended target after all.”

Clay nodded. “Always use your magic, Lacey.”

“I will, but you said their magic may alter, so I need to know how to defend myself without magic too.”

Whenever I had MMA fights, I always watched the opponents’ previous fights. It wasn’t my decision, but my father’s. He ingrained in me the need to know each fighter's strengths and weaknesses. It was the same with Kane. He was the best I’d ever seen, but he still had a sluggish left arm, which nobody else would have noticed, but I did and it meant I went to his left when I knocked him clean out.

“Strangulation, unfortunately Polly was no match, she didn’t have a magic that could help her.”

I nodded, not at all surprised. “Same method as me. Would they try something else?”

“No,” Ryan said. “Carter vanished the demon, which means nobody has reported on your skills.”

“Lacey, you aren’t to blame for any of this,” Clay said, taking my hand. “It is just the way it is. If it wasn’t for the darker world, we’d be living normal lives.”

“And if it wasn’t you, it would be somebody else,” Ryan said, trying his hardest to make me feel better and not to blame.

“Carter mentioned your father came to you,” Clay said and smiled.

“He did. He’d been telling me things since I was young. When I was in the grip of the demon, he came to me and told me to remember to what he taught me when I was five.”

He nodded his head lightly. “Your father was supposed to give you a normal childhood, and we had plenty of arguments over what he did, but I’m glad he provided you with the information now. He probably strengthened you.”

I don’t feel stronger.

“You are strong, Lacey. Stronger, faster, better than anyone before you. Your magic came early. You have powers that started when you were a toddler. That was why your father embraced it.”

“I still have a weak heart.” I wiped my fingers across my cheeks.

“You mean you aren’t heartless. You don’t have to be heartless to be a leader. In fact, it is a strength to show others your vulnerable side. It makes you real.”

I stared at Clay for a moment. Looking into eyes that were the same as my father’s. I could see something sad behind them, but I knew that feeling. I felt it every single day.

“I know this is quick but I want you and Carter to go into the chamber and have the memory removed.”

I nodded.

“You need to bind with Carter soon, Lacey. He needs more power, more magic and you do too. But first I need to know if you want to receive the memory of identifying your parents.”
