“I don’t need to,” I replied.

With a quick jerk, I twisted the giant’s neck, but the sound of the snap didn’t rejoice at my heart as much as I expected it to, and the weighty feeling of his sudden limp and leaden body under my arms made mine stiffen as his body hung underneath me. It was only for a beat of my heart before I let him fall from my grasp and sprung backwards, jumping up and onto my feet.

What had I done?

Stopping and staring as his body twitched. But I couldn’t tear my eyes away, watching and waiting for his nerves to stop flinching. It took seconds, minutes, or it could have been hours.

I took in a sharp intake of breath, and it pulled me out of my trance.

“Shit,” I whispered.

Chapter 26

Lacey

“UncleClay,”Igaspedinto my mobile phone, trying to grab a breath into my lungs. “Someone tried to kill me.”

“Calm down. Are you okay?” Clay said.

“Yes, but I had to kill him. What should I do?”

“Okay Lacey, where’s Carter?”

“What’s Carter got to…”

Adrenalin spun through my veins, keeping me on my feet, keeping me alive. But the rush was disappearing, and I felt myself coming down as the rotating in my head spun with dizziness.

I closed my eyes for a split second and wheezed into the cool air. Oh. My. God. I’d killed a man.

Maybe he was only trying to mug me and was from one of the other kingdoms, and I went too far. But could anyone disappear like that? Leaving bundles of dark dust lingering in the air.

“He said…” I blinked hard and rubbed my temples. Quickly opening them again, and continued to stare at the dead giant. I dragged at my jacket arms to see my wound.

That’s it, sudden loss of blood. That’s why I’m feeling so light-headed.

“Lacey,” Carter shouted behind me.

I turned to see Carter, Kane, Seb and Ryan running towards me and my legs chose that moment to buckle underneath me. Seb swiftly clutched my waist.

“Take deep breaths, Lacey. Come on,” Seb said, as he looked into my eyes.

“Carter is here,” I wheezed into the phone.

Carter took hold of my mobile and wrapped his arms around me. “Clay?” he asked. I nodded.

“We’ve got her. I’ll call you later. We’ve got some work to do,” Carter said and hung up and looked at me. “You’re okay, Lacey.” He then passed me to Ryan and, one by one, they took turns to hug me, but they never stopped glaring at the giant on the floor.

Kane pushed his foot against the beast’s lifeless body and kicked him over. Slumped on his back and I could now really see him, his mottled and marred grey skin which showed a life of battle. At least it was over for him.

I twisted away and pressed my hands over my arms and my neck where goosebumps peppered over my skin. “He’s still alive,” I said. My body trembled and my head started spinning as confusion clouded my mind.

“No, he is definitely dead,” Kane replied. “You broke his neck.”

“We need to get her back to the house. She needs to relax, sleep and feel safe.” I heard, but I didn’t look up to see who said it. My mind was too busy going over the night.

“You used your magic instinctively,” Ryan said, holding me again.

“Yes, you did it,” Carter said, his hands on either side of my face. “I knew I saw your aura.”
