My eyes narrowed at his choice of words and that Carter was smiling, rather than being fearful that I’d killed a man and not just any man, one over a foot taller and much wider than me.

You did it… not you killed a man.

I stared at Carter. “Did what exactly?”

“Defeated the first challenge,” he said. “He needed to know for sure exactly who you are and we knew it would be soon.” Carter’s eyes raised.

“You knew this would happen to me?” I screamed. “He could have killed me.” Still searching for where he stabbed me.

“Lacey, as long as you used your magic, you were always going to be safe. And he knew he could die here. He sacrificed himself,” Ryan said.

“He said he was here to kill me.” I puffed out a breath, realising this was no mugging.

“That was his mission, but he found you and not some poor person who was born around the same time as you.”

“People have died because of me.” My voice was scarcely audible.

“Their souls are in a good place,” Ryan said.

I swallowed, still feeling the soreness from his grasp. “He strangled me. I could have died.”

“At least you’ve finally realised you want to live,” Kane rumbled and shrugged his shoulders. I glared at him and he sighed, his smirk lifting into a weak smile. I turned my gaze to Ryan, then Seb, and finally to Carter.

Seb put his arm protectively around my shoulders again, stroking my arm to calm me.

“If you use your magic, you can never die,” Carter said, holding my arms by my biceps. “You called for me. I came because you called. I will come whenever you call me. We’re linked, but we can be better connected.”

“I know I can do that, but you didn’t save me,” I said and shrugged, still not understanding what the hell was happening.

He sighed and shook his head. “No, that’s one of your strengths, your telepathic power, but you already know that.” Carter looked at the snowy-haired man on the floor. “Your magic is very different. You did something else that stopped him in his tracks. He couldn’t move.”

I nodded.

“He got into my head and asked me to use my real magic. I told him I didn’t need to,” I said.

Carter’s eyes widened as he stared at me. “He got into your head,” he said as he pointed at the monster on the floor. “That’s impossible. He’s just a demon.”

“I spoke to someone,” I said.

“I prefer it when you get into my head and ask me to join you in the shower,” Seb whispered, and winked.

I rushed out a breath as I looked at the man on the floor. “Me too,” I whispered back and smiled.

Seb held my hand. “Please choose us,” he said and leaned in and whispered, “or better still, just me.” He wrapped his arms around me, pulling me in for a hug.

Carter glared at the interaction and cleared his throat. “We watched you use your magic. We held back. He would never kill you because we were here, ready to step in if needed. But I had to see if your magic had started.”

I stared at Carter. “I also think my dad came to me. His voice was similar, and he asked me to remember back to when I was five. He told me I was the golden one and he couldn’t kill me if I used my magic.”

Carter smiled. “He’ll never leave you. Your father was powerful, but died protecting you.”

“You don’t think it was an innocent car accident?” I asked.

“That’s what we are thinking.” Carter gave a tight smile.

“You’ve been discussing it?” I asked as I ran my fingers up and down my arm, then my hands, searching, feeling. Something wasn’t right.

“What’s the matter, Lacey?” Ryan asked.
