Seb, Carter, and Ryan stared at me as they strolled into the living room, and I couldn’t work out what they were seeing. Was I Lacey, their future Queen, or the girl they wanted to move in with them, or Lacey they saw kill a man?

“I need to speak to Carter alone,” I said, standing up and taking my mug of coffee with me.

“Let’s go to my bedroom,” he said.

Growls emitted through the air, and you’d think a pack of lions were staying in the house. I turned and shook my head. “I won’t pounce on him.”

“I’m not worried about you,” Seb said.

I smiled and flicked my hand in the air dismissively, and followed Carter up the stairs and into his room.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

I nodded. “He called me Sunshine,” I announced. “Why would he call me that unless he knows me?”

Carter stared, his eyes pierced deep into mine. “Lacey, it’s time.”

“Time for what?”

“This is what I spoke to you about at the weekend, but the discussion needs to be with the others.”

I nodded. “Before we go. You said you’ve been looking into my parents’ deaths.”

He smiled. “We are. If you don’t believe it and as your protectors, we now have to look into it. There must be a reason your instinct doesn’t agree. But don’t get your hopes up.”

“Okay.” I stood and leaned into Carter and planted a kiss on his lips. “Thank you. That means more to me than anything.”

He smiled, and his grey eyes twinkled. “Lacey, I need to tell you something.”

My eyes raised, waiting for his words.

“What happened that night…” he said and chewed his lip. “It really isn’t true. I spoke to Clay about it. It’s not just a dream, it was a planted memory.”

I shook my head. “Planted? You’re lying. Someone changed my memory?”

"I can't tell you anymore than that. Clay will kill me," he said and swallowed.

"Okay," I whispered as I rose from his bed and left his room, wondering what really happened that night.

Back in the living room, I took the single chair and waited. Carter took a seat opposite me, Kane remained standing, and Seb and Ryan sat on the sofa.

“You need to live here,” Carter began. “You can’t be unprotected again. We now know the Dark King is getting too close.”

Carter stood up and strolled to the door, locking it and returning. “Especially as nobody knowswhohe is, Lacey. But we know his or her powers aren’t mature. If they were, he wouldn’t have sent a demon to kill you.”

“The demon gave me a choice, death or the Dark King?” I hesitated for a moment. “And I dream of him… the Dark King.” I blinked hard and sucked in a breath.

“Dreams?” Seb said. He chewed on his bottom lip and closing his eyes briefly as he sighed.

I nodded and whispered, “for years.”

“That’s strange because our kingdom hid your true identity, hid their future Queen. I know the death of your father meant your magic shone once you turned eighteen.” Carter hesitated. “But he got into your dreams before then. Did you tell Clay?"

"Clay knows. I tell him about each one," I said. Carter slowly lifted his head.

“Wow. That means you’re not only going to be the Queen, but you’re different again. The kingdom veiled you, hid if you like, but the Dark King still knew who you were,” Kane said.

Carter shrugged his shoulders. “It’s all making sense now that the Dark King knows exactly who you are, and has for a while,” he said. "But how?"
