“What?”

“Why can’t you forget them?” His voice was much softer than I expected it to be.

“It’s not like that.” And I could have told him I wasn’t taking it any further with Jack and Blake. That I’d been seriously considering his, Carter, Seb and Ryan’s offer.

But choose not to.

“Not like what?” Kane pulled up to traffic lights and turned and stared me right in the face with those beautiful hazel eyes. I wanted to look away, but something about him kept drawing me to him. I glanced down at his ink.

“I just like them. I enjoy being with them. They are both really nice to me.”

He sighed. “And we aren’t?”

I gazed back at his face, and he stared at me as he waited for an answer. Of course, his reply surprised me, considering how much he provoked me. I glanced at his sexy lips as he ran his tongue across them, but I knew he wasn’t being provocative.

That wasn’t his style.

Kane was just a detached man wrapped in a hot, muscular body and yeah, I didn’t know if it was because he gave me nothing and that he didn’t like me, but I liked him so much. But he didn’t want me, not in the way Seb did.

“Not always. You, of all people, know that,” I mumbled. Swallowing hard at my unkind words, I bit into my bottom lip. His eyes zipped to my mouth, and something inside bubbled. I shook that thought away. “Someone has just tried to kill me and you want to have a discussion about our relationship,” I said as I tried to steer the conversation away.

His lip curled up on one side. “Relationship?”

I knew why he said that because I knew his type; I knew it the first moment I laid eyes on him. The tattoo’s, the cocky attitude and the man who demanded I meet him like I had to do anything he asked—or told me to do.

No, I didn’t expect Kane was a relationship kind of man. He wouldn’t make love to me as he breathed loving words into my ear or touch me in ways that were gentle. He was the type of man women begged to take them to bed, probably happy they’d get one night with him, regardless if it meant he'd cast them away afterwards.

The guy I expected to want a relationship with me, maybe even love me, was Seb, or at least I hoped he was. Possibly, Ryan, I expected he’d be loving too.

I flayed my hands in the air. “Okay, however else you’d like to describe the sordid set-up you’re asking me for. I hoped I was being nice.”

Twisting my body, I gazed out of the window. I was over Kane and my heartbeat was too rapid to continue arguing with him.

He sighed beside me, but I stayed focused on the people we passed, desperate to get to their house before I quarrelled with him again.

“Just surprised you described it as a relationship. Oh, and it wouldn’t be sordid. I think what Jack and Blake want is sordid. They want to share you, at the same time. What we want is for you to be ours and for us to be yours. You choose everything.”

Silence came between us as I mulled over his words. Wondering if I got Kane wrong. I spun back to him as he pulled into the driveway of their house. I smiled. “Maybe I was choosing sordid.”

He turned off the ignition and pushed at his door lever before he twisted back to me and sneered. “We can do sordid.”

Chapter 27

Lacey

Sittingonaseatin the living room, my legs curled under my body as I leaned against the back of the chair. The atmosphere was so thick I could’ve sliced it with a knife, but I tried to ignore the bubbling tension building as Kane walked toward me.

Not that it was too difficult, considering my mind kept replaying the last couple of hours. Over and over, the same thoughts as I struggled to work out if the beast was the man I’d seen lurking around the university, or did I have lots of enemies ready to kill me?

Kane handed me a mug of steaming coffee.

“Thanks.” I smiled. As much as Kane was a jerk in the car, it hadn’t escaped me that he hadn’t called me princess in a while. Though I got used to it now and it didn’t bother me in the same way.

“Lacey, can I talk to you?” he said.

I glanced up at him. And the front door opened. His head twisted to the sound.

“Another time,” he said with a sigh.
