“Me too.” I noticed Seb didn’t say what his skill was, but this wasn’t about him today.

“And that is why you want to be my knights and whatever else,” Lacey said.

“It’s what we want and if you don’t choose us as your protectors, then the kingdom will provide you with another group, and another until you are happy with the group,” I said.

She shrugged her shoulders. “But isn’t that what you want? If I don’t pick you, then you can do your own thing.”

“This is what I want to do?” Carter said.

“I was born for this,” Seb agreed.

Lacey tilted her head at Seb, then stood up, walking towards the stairs. “But Kane doesn’t and to be honest, I understand and agree with him because it’s not fair to him.”

“I didn’t say I didn’t want it now. I said I didn’t want it in the beginning,” Kane said, his voice low.

Lacey waved her hand in the air. “Stop, your actions prove otherwise and I’m going back to the dorms to have a think.” She stopped on the stairs and looked at Carter. “Can we reduce this group of Knights to three?”

Carter looked at Kane. “It will depend on the magic we hold between us. It needs to be balanced, but I’ll speak to Clay.”

“Thanks, Carter, I appreciate it,” she said and turned her back and left again.

Chapter 31

Ryan

Apartfrommeetingafew times in the library to discuss a project. It had been over a week since I’d seen Lacey properly and also since the demon came. She’d visited Seb a few times, and they were getting closer and closer. She also spent the day with Carter, which was all very platonic, from what I’d heard, but Carter was thrilled after his date.

But she and Kane were avoiding each other. Which was still a worry because Clay said he didn’t want him to leave, but he could if he wished. Unfortunately, it would mean we needed two new Knights to replace him and we all had a feeling who that would be. None of us wanted five Knights in this group, especially if it meant Jack and Blake would join us. But apparently, Kane’s fighting skills were the best, except for Lacey’s, of course. But he also had a special skill set that needed replacing, too.

I laid against the headboard of my bed and clicked on her number.

“Hello,” she answered after a couple of rings.

“Hi, Lacey. What are you up to tonight?” I asked, glancing at the screen. It was six in the evening and I kicked myself for leaving it so late.

Seb was at the gym, which meant he wouldn’t try to monopolise her time. Carter and Kane were in the house somewhere, hopefully in their bedrooms.

“I’m busy. I haven’t started an assignment that needs to be handed in next week,” she said.

“I can help if you bring it over.”

There was a moment of silence in the air. “Okay,” she said. “Have you finished yours? It’s the one on land law.”

“That one is easy.” I laughed because Lacey was the brightest but laziest person I knew.

“I know, but it’s boring,” she said. “I need a motivational coach and I know a guy—” She stopped and laughed.

“Bring it, and we’ll get through it in a couple of hours.” She could do it by herself, but sometimes Lacey needed a push in the right direction, and I was happy to be her motivational coach.

“Thanks, Ryan. I’ll see you in half an hour.”

I clicked cancel and placed my mobile on my bedside cabinet. I was still in my bedroom and we’d not changed rooms yet because Lacey still refused to move in with us. She wanted to see how we all got on first. And we were all trying hard again after the big blow-up just after the demon arrived.

I had a feeling it was really because she didn’t want people gossiping about the lifestyle and I got that. Also, the way things were left with Kane, it was best for them to not be around each other, which meant Lacey decided who she spent time with, but she hadn’t slept over since that day.

Today was my day, but only because I got in fast. I had a quick shower, sprayed deodorant, brushed my teeth, and quickly tidied my bedroom and waited.

Finally, hearing a knock at the door, I brushed my hand through my damp hair, trying to make it look vaguely decent. But as usual, it flopped miserably, and I needed to stop trying so hard with hair that wasn’t so helpful or get it cut shorter. Maybe not. Lacey liked my boyish looks.
