Pulling at the handle of the door to my bedroom, I heard the front door to the house as it opened.

“Hi,” Lacey said.

“Hello,” I heard Kane grunt.

Why did he do that around her? If anyone of us was going to scare her away, it would be Kane with his grunts and growls whenever he was around her.

Kane had been brooding, as usual, told he could leave the group if he wanted. He argued he never said he wanted to leave, just letting off steam over why he was there. Though he admitted he despised they chose him as a knight but I did sense a deep-rooted problem with his father was the primary catalyst to him blowing up.

I understood his anger, but he still stayed. At least for now.

“I’m here to see Ryan,” she said.

“Fine… Never expected you to want to see me,” he said.

“You don’t want to see me.” She sighed, her voice softened. “Ryan is helping me with my assignment.”

Kane took a breath, his head raised to the ceiling. “I could have done that?”

“You never offered. Ryan did,” Lacey said.

Kane sighed again.

“Is Ryan here?” she asked.

I was about to say yes and run downstairs, but wanted to see how this played out between them. I continued watching from the landing because we really could do with getting Kane and Lacey talking again, anything to stop Jack and Blake from joining our knight group.

“Lacey…” Kane said and hesitated. “I’m sorry for being a dick that day.”

“Which day was that? There’s been a few.”

He laughed a little. “I’ll give you that one. But I was thinking of the day you stayed over and I was acting like an idiot.”

“There’s been a few of those too, but I assume you’re talking of the last day I stayed, but don’t worry about it, it’s fine. You’re entitled to your opinion, and you're certainly entitled to be angry.”

“I was out of order blowing up like I did.”

“Okay, you’re forgiven,” she said.

Kane laughed, and I realised then I hadn’t heard him laugh for some time. “While you’re in a forgiving mood. I’d like to apologise for any other time that I’ve upset or annoyed you,” he said and sighed.

They gazed at each other for what seemed like forever. I cleared my throat and walked downstairs. Lacey’s eyes darted to mine. She gave me a smile.

“Thanks, Kane. It means a lot,” she said, shifting her gaze back to him. “And I’m sorry too.”

“You’ve got nothing to be sorry for.”

She shrugged her shoulder and smiled at him. Kane cleared his throat and asked, “can I take you on a date at the weekend? Just me and you, so we can start again?”

She nodded. “I’d like that.” She smiled at him again, and again, when we got to my bedroom.

I stared at Kane as he watched her walk into my room. He must have felt it, and his gaze landed on me.

“You need to put a top on. You look desperate,” Kane said, a hint of disdain laced his voice.

I ignored him. Not sure what was going on there, but I kicked the door shut because this was my time now.

When she took her coat off, I tried to saunter to her. It probably looked clumsy. I was hardly Seb with his swagger or Carter with his strut. Not sure how I’d describe Kane. The man attracted women like none of us could, and he did nothing at all. Maybe the girls liked that moody, brooding, miserable look.
