“Other things? Such as what?” she asked, raising her eyebrows.

“I think that conversation is best for another day,” I said. “Don’t worry, I’m not into knife play or anything dangerous.”

“Is it a good job that I can’t read your mind?” she said and winked.

I kissed her. “You never know what you like until you try it.”

“Oh, I’m intrigued,” she said.

“You also need to get that assignment finished,” I said, rolling myself off her and pulled up my sweatpants.

“Did you not put any underwear on, on purpose?” she said as she straightened her clothes and walked to the door.

I cocked one eyebrow.

“Ryan, where is my sweet guy?”

“Don’t worry, once it’s away, I’m back to being sweet again.”

Lacey left the bedroom and went to the bathroom down the hallway. When she returned, she took a notebook and opened her laptop. I rested with my back against the headboard.

“I feel close to you. I know you all seem to have a hang-up about Seb,” she said.

“I suppose it’s natural we all see how you two are together. The flirting between you.”

She turned and laughed. “I saw you chatting with a girl. You can do light and flirty.”

“That was my ex, Jessica. She wants to try again,” I said, wondering if it would spark her jealousy.

“Oh, I didn’t realise she was at the university, too. I thought you said you broke up because you came here,” Lacey whispered. She looked at me. “And you, do you want to try again?”

I blew out a breath. “I was seeing her for a long time.”

She sighed and looked away for a moment. “I get that. It’s understandable, I suppose. So what next?”

“I’ve said I’ll let her know when I’ve decided what to do,” I said.

Lacey nodded. “And have you decided?”

I shrugged my shoulders.

Lacey took a sharp intake of breath.

Chapter 32

Seb

Theweatherhadturnedfrom mild and pleasant to rainy and cold. She refused all offers to pick her up and turned up in an Uber. That was a blessing of sorts because she hadn’t been on her bike either. I watched her from my bedroom as she hung around outside the house. She was studying her phone and I could see she was restless by the way her back tensed and her eyes flitted around.

Then we were to blame for that because I knew each one of us had pestered her in our own individual way about who should be her first.

But I was always her first, every life. It was always me. And I wanted it again, but somehow I didn’t. Would this life work if we changed the start? Would we make this life be the one that was our forever?

Regardless, today she had decided, and we were all on edge waiting for her to arrive.

She tapped a message on her phone and puffed out a warm breath that left a ring of steam lingering in the cold air. I narrowed my eyes, wondering who she had contacted, picking up my phone, but it wasn’t me.

I sighed and ran my tongue under my lip.
