“No Lacey, listen to me.” He took hold of her hand. “I get why you feel the way you do, but don’t end us. We love each other. We’ve always loved each other.”

“But the way I feel now about Ryan is the same way I felt when you cheated on me.”

“I told you I didn’t cheat, you’ll find out the truth soon,” Carter hissed, shaking his head.

Lacey sighed. “I didn’t want to feel this way about any of you. I wanted it to be… different,” she said, not listening to Carter’s pleas. She hesitated. While I wondered what different meant. “I didn’t want to get that close again.”

“Why?” Carter asked. Because I’d lost my voice, nothing was coming out. Although, my inner voice was furious, I wanted to unleash the beast I was but I had to hold on tight.

“My emotions are all over the place at the minute. I just feel…” she puffed out her lips with a slight sigh. “I just don’t feel the way I wanted to and people are talking about me,” she said.

“People talk about you because you are Aurora Lace Summer, the future Queen of the Magical Kingdom,” Kane said.

“But I need to settle down with my studies and stop messing about. If I survive the Dark King, I’ve got a business to take over, so I need to study much harder than I currently do,” she murmured.

It sounded to me like a complete load of excuses.

“But we are your protectors, Lacey,” Ryan said, and I wanted to punch him. He brought this on, and now he was talking about being her protector.

“But you don’t have to be my lovers,” she whispered.

“I’m happy for it to be just you and me if you’re worried about people talking,” Carter said, and she smiled at him. “It was only ever meant to be us.”

“I’ll think about it,” she said, but it didn’t look convincing.

She looked at each of us again, stopping a little longer at Kane. She looked pained. He looked away.

“I’m sorry we never got to go on our date, Kane.”

He shrugged his shoulders.

She smiled a weak smile. “At least one of you is okay with this. Kane isn’t bothered. Ryan has someone else. Carter cheated on me.”

Carter and Kane grunted. What did they expect?

She looked at me, her eyes glistened as they closed for a moment. “Sorry,” she said, standing up.

Nobody got up with her. We all sat, too stunned to move, too heartbroken that we’d lost her so swiftly again. The front door slammed shut.

“What the fuck, Ryan?” Carter said.

“I never said I was going back to my ex. Just that she contacted me and that she wanted to try again,” Ryan said, his hands raised in the air as he shook his head.

“Why did you tell her?” Carter spat.

“I don’t know.” Ryan rubbed at the stubble forming on his jaw. “I don’t know. It just happened.”

“She’ll call Jack now,” Kane grumbled.

“And what the fuck does it matter to you?” I shouted. “You gave her nothing.”

I twisted to Carter. “And don’t you say anything either. You’re only concerned you take her virginity before anyone else. She’s just the one who got away for you.”

“Fuck off, it’s more than that,” Carter said.

“Yeah, we all know you want to be the one who she binds to,” I hissed. “But the kingdom will find another group of Knights. And then Carter, whatever is in your head that you’re keeping secret won’t happen. You needed us more than we need you. Ryan wasn’t the only one who ruined it.”

Feeling the tears stinging my eyes, I stormed away.
