Was he speaking in terms of the future? “I don’t think that’s likely. But I’ll keep you posted.”

“I have a question to ask and I want you to keep an open mind.”

“Okay,” she answered hesitantly, hoping it wasn’t bad news.

“The foundation hosts a fundraising gala every year. It’s a big deal. Lots of wealthy people attend and drop loads of cash. I’d like you to go with me.”

“Oh.” She’d attended a few formal events in LA, but something on this scale was intimidating. Still, she was thrilled he wanted her to be his date. “When is it?”

“Two weeks.”

“I see. That’s the part you want me to keep an open mind about, right?”

“Yeah.” He ran a hand over her arm. “I understand you have to find a job, but I don’t want you to give up too soon on New York—or us.”

She held his gaze, not exactly sure what to say. Whatever was happening between them was moving fast. She was torn between jumping all in and being more cautious.

“The band will be playing Motown music,” he added with a grin, his eyes hopeful.

Finn knew exactly what to say to seal the deal. But it was more than just the date she was agreeing to. She didn’t have to run back to LA yet. She was willing to take a chance and stay in New York with Finn. “It sounds like fun. But I’ll have to find something to wear. I don’t own anything formal.”

He tilted his head. “Let me buy your dress.”

“Are you sure?”

“I insist. Don’t worry, I know who to call and I think she’ll give me a discount.”

She leaned in to give him a kiss. “A fancy dress and Motown. How can I refuse?

CHAPTER 28

COLLEEN

“Wake up, Colleen.”

Colleen rolled over to Finn. “What time is it?” She muttered, reaching her arm out for him, but he wasn’t in bed. Her eyes flew open. Finn was sitting on the bed fully dressed. “Where are you going? I thought we were spending a couple of days here?”

“I wanted to,” he said, trailing a finger down her cheek, “but I have to go to the office. There are a few emergency situations I have to handle in person.”

She leaned up on her elbows. “I can come with you. You can drop me off at my apartment.”

He shook his head. “I’ll be back as soon as I can. Let’s have one more day here before going back.”

“What about avoiding publicity? Isn’t that the reason we’re here and not in the city?”

He laid her back against the pillows with a kiss. “I’m stealth in the Explorer. Take it easy today, go for a walk with Alfie, read, whatever you want.”

“Alfie?” She jolted up. “I’ve never taken care of a dog before.”

“Don’t worry. I left you written instructions. Alfie’s easy.”

She took a look at the bedside clock. “It’s not even seven o’clock yet.” She ran a hand through her hair. “I wish you didn’t have to leave.”

“Believe me, there’s nothing I’d rather do than be with you in bed.” His eyes softened with a smile.

“Don’t be too long. You have to rescue me from that beast.” She tried to sound lighthearted, but the truth was she didn’t have a clue what to do with the dog.

With a tender kiss, he whispered, “You’ll be great. Just take Alfie on the same walk we took with him yesterday. He knows his routine. I can’t wait to be back here with you.” With one more kiss he was gone.
