Chrissy

"So,thisisthedude that thinks he's good enough for my sister?" James asks as we walk into the kitchen at my mom’s house.

"James," my mom scolds him. "Mind your manners."

"Everyone, this is Troy. Troy this is my mom, Brenda and my dad, Roger. This is Brittany, and Sophia and James." I point to each of them as I say their names.

Troy approaches my dad first and shakes his hand.

"It's nice to meet you, sir."

Then to my mom, who slaps his hand away playfully and gives him a hug.

"Oh, I am so glad Chrissy met someone who makes her happy," she says, and they pull away from each other.

Sophia gives him the up and down then crunches her face.

"He will do, I suppose."

"I'm guessing she's most like you?" Troy says to me while pointing to my sister.

Sophia scoffs, and everyone else laughs.

"That would be accurate," James says.

"It's nice to meet you, Troy," Brittany says and shakes his hand also.

"Same to you," Troy says.

Then he turns to my brother, whose arms are crossed and has a scowl on his face. Troy walks over to him but doesn't try to shake his hand.

"I want you to know, I would never do anything to hurt your sister."

James nods his head and Troy backs away, rejoining me.

"Well, now that that's out of the way, let's eat lunch," my mom says.

We gather around the table while my mom serves pinwheel sandwiches, perogies and pasta salad.

"What's this?" Troy leans over to asking me while pointing to the perogies on his plate.

"Perogies?" I ask, he nods. "They are like dumplings with potato and cheese inside. Kind of a staple here."

"Sounds great," he says popping one into his mouth. He nods his head while he chews it. "Very good.”

"So, Troy, what do you do for a living?" my dad asks him.

"I worked at a mine there in Columbus Falls. Mostly underground work."

"Oh, yeah. We have some big mining companies around here."

"I may have to look into that. That is, if Chrissy wants me to stay."

He smirks at me, and my stomach fills with butterflies. He would stay. Likestay, stay?

The rest of lunch goes by quickly with good conversation. Troy and I say our goodbyes, and he drives us back to my apartment.

"You would stay?" I ask him.
