Therestoftheweek flies by and it’s not long before I am driving to the veterinarian’s office to drop off a fresh batch of cookies. My nerves are coursing through my body when I pull into the parking lot and see Ethan’s truck. Even though I don’t know why I have a reason to be nervous. I haven’t even talked to him since last Monday.

I grab the container of cookies and walk up to the door, which is unlocked, and the first thing I hear is him talking. When I round the corner I see that he is on the phone and his back is to me. I try not to watch him as he talks to whomever about whatever and go about filling the basket with cookies. But he hears the container open and turns around.

I watch him. His face as it turns from annoyance to a wide smile and happy eyes. He waves at me then points to the phone and rolls his eyes. I laugh a little and nod my head. As I finish unloading the cookies and can’t help but notice that he hasn’t stopped watching me. I close the lid and glance at him again, he holds his hand up to me and mouths the word hold on, before I can turn away.

I stand there, butterflies racing through my stomach, as he finishes his phone call.

“Sorry about that. Had to make sure we had enough vaccines for all the kittens that will be at the adoption event this weekend,” he says.

“Oh, you know about that?”

“Yes,” he says, as he rounds the counter to stand in front of me. “The girl I talked to told me it’s being held at your store.”

“Yeah, I’m really excited about it. We have never done something like this before.”

“Should be a great time. So many kittens are looking for homes.”

“I look forward to snuggling every single one of them.”

“Me too,” he says and chuckles.

“You um, you’re going to be there?” I ask him, trying not to swoon over the fact that he wants to snuggle kittens.

“I thought I would stop in. I still want to see what you have to offer in the store. And who knows, maybe I’ll adopt a kitten.”

“Okay, perfect. I guess I’ll see you then,” I say to him as I turn and make my way to the door.

“Yup.”

I stop before I push the door open and look back at him. His gaze shoots up.Was he just checking out my butt?He clears his throat then smiles.

“I hope you have a purrfect Monday,” I say, rolling my r’s.

“Same to you, Lily.”

I leave the office. My cheeks are on fire and I’m pretty sure my dignity is on the floor in front of the door for every animal to walk on when they come in.

Purrfect? Really Lily? You idiot.

“It’s not that funny,” I tell my sister as she snorts and laughs through the phone.

“Okay, okay. It’s kinda funny and even though you don’t see it right now, you will eventually.”

“This is why I’m single.”

“No. That’s not why.”

“Oh yeah? Then why?”

“You just haven’t found the right guy.”

“Yeah, yeah. I’m over that excuse.”

“Well, it’s the only excuse I got. Or, you’re just extremely too picky.”

“I am picky. I will give you that. But I am not going to lower my standards.”

“I never said you should. When it’s right, you will know it.”
