“Because of those big ol’ doe eyes of yours. Remind me of a deer.”

Giving him another eye roll and big sigh, Cassie turned back around to watch Kyle and Callie finish their dance. “They are so sweet.”

Jamal paused at her remark. There was something sweet all right, and it had nothing to do with his friend and new bride. He could still feel the taste of Cassie’s lips on his own. “How about you dance with me, Bambi?”

“What?!” Cassie looked up at him with her big doe eyes and his heart skipped a beat. Damn but this girl did something to his insides.

“I asked you to dance. You know, like what the newlyweds are doing right now.”

“I don’t dance.”

“And I don’t dance to country music. Good to know this song is about to end. It isn’t awful for a country tune, but I have a feeling something better is going to come on.”

“What makes you say that?”

Jamal leaned down and whispered in her ear, feeling his breath exhale on her collarbone. The sweet scent of her perfume wafted under his nose and he breathed her in. She smelled like coconuts and a beach day full of sunshine. “What are you wearing, Bambi?”

“A dress, idiot,” she responded in a breathy whisper.

Jamal laughed. Grabbing her hand, he led her to the dance floor, where Ellie Goulding’s “Love Me Like You Do,” was playing from the DJ booth.

“Ja-maaaaalll,” Cassie said. “I told you I didn’t dance.”

“It’s alright, Bambi. All you have to do is let me lead.”

Grabbing her in his arms, he pulled her close, one hand on her waist and the other holding her hand against his chest. “See? Nothing to it. Just follow my feet.”

Jamal pulled her even closer, gently swaying to the rhythmic beat of the music. He loved the way she felt in his arms.

“Youpicked this song?” she asked, looking up at him with her big eyes full of surprise.

“Just because I’m a stellar athlete doesn’t mean I don’t love a cheesy love song or two. Ellie Goulding’s music is tight.”

Cassie busted out in a laugh. “Tight, huh? Who else do you listen to? Ingrid Michaelson?”

“Who?”

“Another female who hastightmusic,” Cassie pulled away from him and air-quoted his words. “I’ll make you a CD.”

“What? Have we gone back to ninety-six? Are you making me a mix?” Jamal teased.

Cassie hit him playfully on the arm. “I just want to make sure you are really interested in all genres of music and not just trying to impress me with youremotional side.”

“What does that mean?”

“That means I heard you blasting Dr. Dre in your car when you pulled up to the park the other day.”

“That’s right, Cass.” JJ came up to the dancing couple and pushed Cassie out of the way. “My daddy loves some Dr. Dre. I do, too. His music istight.”

“I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” Cassie said, raising her eyebrows and smiling at Jamal.

“You can go ahead and dance with your dad, kiddo. I told him I wasn’t a great dancer anyway.”

Jamal stared at Cassie’s back as she walked away. Looking down at his daughter, he told her, “You’re ruining my game, kid. And I’m not talking my basketball one.”

He was met with a frown from his kid. “Daaaaad! You owe me!”

“Owe you what?”
