“A Nae Nae battle.” Jamal listened with a grin as “Watch Me,” came on again.

“What?” She held her hands up in an innocent gesture. “You’re not the only one who knows how to request songs from the DJ.”

Jamal threw his head back and laughed. He had the greatest kid in the entire world.

-------------------------

“He’s such a good dad.” Callie came up and put her arm around Cassie’s shoulders.

“He is that,” Cassie agreed.

“What’s with the frown, Cass?”

“Nothing.”

“I’ve known you long enough to know it’s not nothing. Now spill.”

Cassie sighed and plopped into the nearest chair. “I kissed him.”

“Him who?” Callie sat down much more gracefully than Cassie. “Him as inJamalhim?”

“Yes,” Cassie whispered fiercely. “Now keep it down! I don’t want everyone at your wedding reception knowing!”

Callie’s eyes were wide and round and a huge smile was on her face. “Well?”

“Well, what?”

“Is he a good kisser?” Callie waggled her eyebrows.

Cassie sighed. “Unfortunately, yes.”

Her friend frowned. “Why unfortunately?”

“Because, Cal. You know about my past. I can’t keep letting people in my life.”

“That’s just stupid,” Callie said, crossing her arms over her chest and glaring at Cassie. “That’s not your life anymore. Besides, there’s no way your dad could know where you are.”

“But there’s always that chance. I can’t put more people at risk, Cal. You know that. I wouldn’t have even told you and Max if you hadn’t kept asking about where I was from. It slipped.”

“And you should have told me way before that, Cass. There’s no way your dad can get you here. We can protect you.”

“I took my inheritance and ran, Callie. You don’t know him. You don’t know how angry I know that had to make him. If he finds me-"

“That was money your mom left toyou. Not him.”

“That’s not how he thinks of it. I took amilliondollars, Cal. One. Million. Dollars.”

“That he didn’t even know your mom had.”

“He knows now, though.”

“I don’t care if he knows or not. Your mom left you that money. Not him. You earned it. All the abuse and neglect you suffered from that man-”

“Where would I have gone, Cal? I didn’t have anyone. He made sure of that. It was always my word against his. I learned the hard way what happened if I told. I had my arm in a cast for six weeks. No one questioned the sheriff’s honor, though, Callie. Not even when it involved his daughter. And if he ever finds-”

“Hush, you. He won’t ever find you. Promise. And if he does, we will be there with you. I won’t ever let anything happen to you again. Now, come on! You’re ruining my wedding with all the dark memories. Let’s go dance!”

“I told Jamal I don’t dance. And ifyoukeep dancing like a fiend, you’ll run out of energy for your big night,” Cassie teased.
