Cassie rolled her eyes and broke her fortune cookie in two. She began to read her fortune. Little by little, her face became even more flushed that what the sun had kissed her skin with being at the ballpark all day.

“What? Does it say something good?” he asked.

Cassie looked at him, eyes wide. “Nope. Nothing interesting at all.”

“Yeah, right. I’m not buying that, dad,” JJ chirped from her perch next to Cassie. “So, you gonna spill or not? Or am I gonna have to take it from you?”

Cassie held her fortune paper above her head out of JJ’s reach. “I love you kid, but I can’t let you do that.”

Her attention on JJ, Jamal grabbed the paper out of Cassie’s hand and opened it.

“Hey! Jamal, give that back!” she yelled, trying to grab the fortune he held high in the air. “You can’t read it. That’s cheating. Or bad luck. Something.”

“Nice try, Bambi. Too bad I don’t believe it. Let’s see what was on this little piece of paper that has you all flushed.”

“I’m so not flushed,” she pouted. “It’s the sun. I’m Alaskan all the way.”

“What’s it say, daddy-o? Is it juicy?”

“Now is the time to try something new. Hmmmmm…interesting,”

“Why is that interesting, dad? Seems kinda stupid to me. You tried softball. Maybe you could try basketball?”

“That’s one way of looking at it,” Jamal said, his gaze not wavering from Cassie’s. Just when he thought she couldn’t get any more red, she turned a darker shade, this time running down her neck as well.

“Whatever,” JJ said with a shrug. “I’m going to get more soda.”

“I don’t know what you meant, telling JJ it was a different way of looking at things,” she said. Jamal was sure she was going to follow her words by sticking out her tongue at him, but she refrained.

“I think you do, Bambi. Besides, you know what they say about fortune cookies, right?”

“No. But I’m sure you’re going to tell me,” she said with a roll of her eyes.

“They say you should always end what your cookie says with ‘in bed.’ Does that change things for you?”

Cassie’s eyes went wide. “Nope,” she lied.

“Oh, Bambi. What did I tell you about lying? Your eyes tell it all. Right now, you’re undressing me with your eyes.”

“You wish,” she said unconvincingly.

“Iknow,” he said. “I’m just waiting on you to admit it. Whaddya say, Bambi? Want to take me up on the offer?”

“Not on your life.”

“And there go the eyes again, telling a different story. When you decide to be honest, you can let me know,” he said with a wink.

“You are insufferable,” she replied, trying her best to look serious.

Jamal laughed. She was so cute it should be a crime.

“Guess what my fortune says, guys!” JJ came running over to the table.

“I’m thinking it’s a good one by the cheesy smile on your face,” Jamal replied.

“It says ‘You will become great if you believe in yourself.’ Pretty good, huh? I already believe in myself, so I guess I will be super great. Maybe even so good I get to play at OU. Wouldn’t that be awesome?!”

Jamal and Cassie laughed. “One thing you don’t like is confidence, kiddo,” Jamal replied. “You just can’t slack off because your fortune says all you have to do is believe in yourself.”
