We got the W. Were you cheering for me from the couch?

He grinned as his phone buzzed two seconds later.

What’s a W? Were you doing something important tonight? JJ and I went shopping. ;)

Now, I know you’re lying,he replied. You might have convinced her to buy SOME girly clothes, but my girl ain’t gonna make shopping a habit.

LOL…you got me. We yelled and threw popcorn at the TV when calls didn’t go your way.

That’s my girls. See you tomorrow night?

You bet.

Trevin walked out of the locker room shower stalls, rubbing his head with the towel draped over his neck. “Why are you smiling that cheesy ass smile, Jenkins? I’m the one who had the game of my life, as the media has already started saying. I should be the one smiling like that.”

Jamal popped a towel his friend’s way. “That you did, my man. Youshouldbe smiling. Go schmooze with some hot chicks at a bar.”

Trevin threw a t-shirt over his head. “Nah. I think I’m gonna hold out for that hot little Thunder cheerleader that you know. What was her name again? Ar- something.”

“Aria,” Jamal said with a grin. “And you better prepare yourself for that one. She’s pretty feisty. And something tells me she doesn’t hold on to a man very long.”

“That’s because she hasn’t been out withme,” Trevin replied, clapping Jamal on the back. “Just you wait.”

“Whatever you say, man. I don’t think you know what you’re getting yourself into.”

“I can handle that redhead. Don’t you remember? I dated that one hottie of a redhead in college. Emma Mae was her name. Damn, that girl could kiss your toes off. And do someotherawesome stuff with her tongue, if you know what I mean.” Trevin waggled his eyebrows.

“I know what you mean,” Jamal replied. “But that doesn’t mean I want to hear the details. And wasn’t she the one you cried over for a week because she was playing youandthat guy on the soccer teamandthe lacrosse player?”

“I didnotcry!” Trevin remarked. “I just lamented the loss.”

“Whatever you gotta tell yourself, man. But, for the record, you totally cried.”

Jamal ran off before his friend could pop him with his towel, too. “You’re full of shit!” He heard Trevin call as he walked into a shower stall and turned on the steaming water. With a sigh, he let the hot water run over his head and down his shoulders, easing the tension in his sore muscles.

As the water continued to cascade over his body, he couldn’t help but remember the shower he and Cassie had taken after they had made love. The feel of her hands rubbing all over his body with the rivulets of water. Her hot kisses trailing down his neck as the water rained down on them. Her touch, her scent, the noises she made when he kissed her in the exact right spot behind her ear, her moans as she called out his name. He shivered at the thought. He loved having her hands on him even more than having his hands on her. The fact that she had been a virgin astounded him. He was worried that he would hurt her, but she gave all she had, took all Jamal gave and begged for more. And he gave her just what she wanted. What he wanted to give her for the rest of her life.

People always told him how awesome he was to be who he was - Jamal Jenkins, the Thunder’s point guard. The next MVP. The multi-million dollar player. The famous athlete who signed autographs for hours on end. But for the first time in his life, Jamal felt like it was awesome to simply be Jamal Jenkins, the man. A daughter he loved and a woman he wanted to make his wife. Yep. It was definitely good to be him.

CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN

Before Cassie could believe it, Thanksgiving had come and gone, with the first day of winter and Christmas right around the corner. Jamal had been playing in Dallas on Thanksgiving Day, so JJ and Cassie had spent Thanksgiving with Kyle and Callie. Irma and Melvin had taken a cruise to the Bahamas. They came back with a necklace made of seashells for JJ and a beautiful wrap-around, coral dress for Cassie. It felt awesome to have people care about her. She hadn’t had that since her mother had died. She finally felt like she was part of a family.

“Earth to Cassie. Are you there?” Cassie and her friend, Natasha, were sitting in the teacher’s lounge, waiting for their kids to finish their music class.

“I’m here,” Cassie said, looking up from her bowl of leftover chicken teriyaki and fried rice from Pei Wei. Jamal and JJ had gotten her hooked on the place. She had probably tried every entrée they had on the menu, but Mongolian beef was still her favorite. “Just thinking.”

“About what?”

“What to get JJ and Jamal for Christmas. I have no clue. Do you have any ideas?”

“Nope,” Natasha said. “I haven’t bought anything for a man for Christmas for three years.” Natasha’s husband had died in Afghanistan. He was in the army and was killed when the tank he was driving hit a landmine and exploded.

“Are you ever going to start dating again?” Cassie asked her. “You’re still young. And beautiful. I hate the thought of you living alone for the rest of your life.”

“I have my cat,” Natasha said with a sad smile.
