Something rough pulled, and tightened, and there was nothing there. Nothing there.

“Seff?” I stared at my wrists, seeing no signs of restraints.

My brother’s euphoria flooded my body. I stumbled and fell scraping my palms on the asphalt.

Seff swept me up into his arms in one smooth motion. “Desarae, what’s wrong?”

Then I couldn’t move.

“Des, what’s going on?”

Something warm tightened around my neck.

“Desarae!”

“I can’t...” I shook my head and grabbed at my throat. Even though my brother had a split second of fear, he’d enjoyed what was happening to him. I inhaled a shallow breath and growled. “Decker, you stupid, dick-waving douche.”

“Are you kidding me? He went to a beating session?”

The pressure released on my neck. My breath rushed back into me in great gulps of air. I bent over and coughed, so relieved.

“Are you okay?” Seff’s hands moved over me as I recovered my breath. “Is Deck close? Is that why you’re feeling what’s happening?”

“I think so.” I picked out a pebble that was imbedded in my palm. “I don’t normally seek out our twin bond, so it’s hard to tell.”

“Hey, Seff!” a deep male voice called out. “Over here.”

A flash of headlights in the dark. Across the tarmac, I saw the dark outline standing next to an SUV.

“I’m okay,” I said as Seff put his arm around me and lifted me to my feet. The sensation of bindings on my wrists and ankles didn’t hurt as much as before. I peered across the tarmac to see the male who called out. He was nothing more than a black silhouette as he stepped in front of the headlights. He could have been the last rogue for all we knew.

“Who is that?”

“Brenin.”

There was no mistaking the Breeder build. I squinted, trying to make out the male’s face. “Are you sure?”

“Yep. I know my cousin’s voice, and I can smell him.”

I smelled nothing but diesel fuel, gasoline, wet asphalt, and my own blood.

Seff flipped my hands over and brushed away the last of the loose gravel still clinging to my skin. “Are you okay?”

I shook my head in disgust as I stared at my bloody palms. “When we catch up to my brother, I’m first.”

“First at what, darlin’?”

“Slugging him in the face.”

Seff chuckled. “I can’t wait to see that.”

“Took a nasty spill, huh?” Brenin called out from a few yards away.

“I’m okay.”

He stepped closer and inspected my scrapes. “We’ll get that cleaned up. I have water and a first-aid kit in the car.”

I nodded and said, “Thanks. I heal fast, so just cleaning it will be fine.”
