Seff took my hand. We turned back toward the SUV. The rest of the pack spread out and disappeared across the street behind a building near the market.

Seff and I didn’t speak until after we’d undressed and tossed our clothing inside the car.

I took a deep breath. “The rogue will never let him go.”

Seff didn’t offer a verbal agreement. His understanding flowed through our bond.

I looked out across the horizon. As time passed, the situation had the potential to become more dangerous. There wasn’t much left of the night. Some early rising human might notice a small pack of wolves roaming around. Or possibly, naked humans.

“We can’t let this drag out. I don’t want Gunner’s pack to put themselves in any more danger.”

“If there’s a chance to save Deck—”

“Then, we will.” I tried to smile, but my face wouldn’t cooperate when my heart hurt so deeply.

Seff’s dark eyes gazed into mine. “Whatever you need, I’ll be right beside you. I promise.”

The smile I’d been working on finally broke through. “Thank you.”

We took on our wolf forms. Seff led me across the street, down the road, and around the back of a large structure sharing the same dirt parking lot as the market. Besides the unfamiliar smell of nearby wolves, the grassy scent of hay and the sweet smell of honey and oats came from inside the building. The sign on the side of a large flatbed delivery truck readBalfore Sanders and Sons Feed.

Gunner, Ralph, Simone, and Brenin stood peering around the corner of the building when Gunner’s phone vibrated.

He answered with one sharp word, “Yeah?”

“I want to talk to Simone Mowbray, or whatever her name is now.”

Gunner looked at his mate, who nodded. He held the phone out to her.

Simone took a deep breath then asked, “How do I know you?”

“Oh, you know me, and I know you. Did you ever tell your mate about your short stint in college? About those two males you hooked up with before Rule branded you?”

Simone’s eyes darted to Gunner, who nodded and said in a low voice, “He’s gonna try to get inside your head, baby.”

She replied with a nod.

“Rule knew about them,” said the rogue. “He had us follow you. We tagged that big football player right away. Rule had us wait a month, but when we got the go-ahead to pick him up, that human didn’t last over fifteen minutes.” The rogue chuckled. “Humans get one good look at us changing form, their nightmares coming to life, and they can’t handle it. They always died so quickly. Anyway, that other male, the wolf? He was a fighter. We had lots of fun—”

Gunner took the phone, tapped it, hanging up on the rogue.

“Gun...” Tears slid down Simone’s beautiful face. “How manyhumanshave they murdered?”

Gunner wrapped her in his arms and murmured, “We’ll probably never know. Bunch of sick, inbred bastards.” His phone vibrated again. He tapped the screen, then stared as it lit up his green eyes. His face paled in horror. “Ah, fuck.”

Questions flew at him from every side.

“What?”

“What did he say?”

“Gunner, what is it?”

Ralph took his brother’s phone and stared at the tiny screen. The phone vibrated once more, and Ralph answered this time.

He growled deep in his throat. “You sick sonofabitch.”

“Yeah, well, what can I say?” The rogue laughed. “This one is tough. No one has lasted this long. They’re usually begging for mercy or death way before this. I swear he’s enjoying it. Anyway, I don’t think he’ll last much longer, so I thought I’d let him get in some last words...unless you want to trade places with him. I’ll give you a few minutes to decide.” He disconnected the call.
