“Gunner, don’t,” Simone whispered. “Don’t take her choice from her.” She took the phone and stepped in close to Gunner. “Let hersakanacare for her. I’ll text the rogue. Just tell me what you want me to say.”

Instead of giving his mate a message to text, the Alpha male focused his green eyes on me.

“This would probably work better if I could touch you, but I know firsthand how possessive bonded males can be.”

Seff snarled and hissed as his canines filled his mouth.

Gunner held his hands up. “I ain’t touching her, Seff, so cool the fuck down. I’m just gonna try to ease the pain.”

I know Gunner saw the confusion on my face, but he spoke up anyway.

“Nothing that rogue bastard does to your brother will cause you any physical pain. You hear me?”

His stern Alpha command made something seem to slide into place inside my brain. Warmth tingled across my skin like a nice hot shower. I nodded as the stabbing sensation in my side subsided.

He leaned his big body down, his face only inches from mine. “You will feel the bond, but you will feel no pain.”

I took a shaky breath, then another. The pain was gone.

CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

Amale roughly thesame size and build as Gunner appeared from the darkness. I recognized him immediately. Barefoot, dressed in a worn flannel shirt and faded jeans, Ralph moved in silence, a rifle gripped in one hand and a large, heavy duffle bag in his other.

Gunner spoke, but his eyes didn’t leave mine. “Hey, Ralph, you got everything?”

“Yep,” Ralph replied. “Kern’s on his way.”

Gunner’s green eyes twinkled as he asked, “You okay now?”

I focused and reached out for the bond thread with Decker. He was suffering but also experiencing a euphoric high at the same time. Not actually feeling his pain was a plus. Knowing he enjoyed that same pain was just...confusing and disturbing.

I stared up at Gunner. “Yes. I still feel Decker, but I’m okay. Thank you.”

Gunner nodded. “My pleasure,” he said with a small smile, then turned away to talk with Ralph.

“Desarae.” Seff’s hands were on my face. His lips were on mine, kissing me as though his kisses could heal everything inside me. And they did, mostly. In my heart, I knew Seff would always be there for me. For a few moments, I could forget my brother was being held captive by a rogue. With my lips on Seff’s, my body wrapped up in his arms, my world narrowed down to one male—mysakana.

“Seff,” Gunner’s deep voice whispered, “we gotta get across the street. I need a better view.”

Seff pulled away, nodded, and smoothed the tears from my cheeks.

“We’ll meet you there in a minute,” Seff said.

Gunner gave a quick nod and shifted into his massive wolf form.
