He nodded. His eyes drifted down to my mouth, and I felt a spark of longing...of lust. His and mine. Not wanting to waste one more second, I went up on my toes, pressed my lips to his, and he was right there with me. He swept his tongue into my mouth, kissing me deep and long. It had probably been less than thirty minutes since we’d been in my yurt, my breasts bared to him as I’d sat at the edge of my bed, waiting for him to strip me naked and make love to me for the first time. My entire body heated in a rush as I remembered how his eyes had brightened, like I was the most beautiful female he’d ever seen. The hot, hard length of him pressed into my belly was evidence at least some part of his mind was on the same level as mine.

The aroma of smashburgers on the grill and onion rings in the deep fryer made my stomach growl. We both smiled when Seff’s stomach let off a deep rumble.

“I didn’t realize I was so hungry,” I said as I pulled away. “We should head back inside.”

Seff nodded. “Gimme a second.” He bit his lip, then ground his teeth as though he were in pain.

I glanced down at the bulge in his jeans. “Sorry about that.”

He shook his head and swept a hand down in front of himself. “Never apologize for this.”

“Just bad timing, huh?”

“Nah.” He grinned. His desire for me caused his rich scent to intensify. “Been fightin’ this battle since the second we met.”

Seff wanted me. A blush tingled across my face. That same heat lit up my veins and settled as a hot pulse in my breasts and between my legs. Even my canines ached and throbbed with the need to mark this male. I wanted him, too. In every way I could have him.

Placing my palm flat against his erection, I whispered, “I’m fighting the same battle.” I leaned in, gave him a downward stroke, and felt his entire body shudder as he hissed.

“Holy fuck, Des.” He grabbed my hand, brought my palm to his lips, and brushed kisses just at the center. “Slow down, darlin’. We got plenty of time.”

“Plenty of time.” He couldn’t promise me time. I would never ask him to. I sighed and stepped back, putting space between us. Unfortunately, the cold night air did little to cool the desire in my blood. “But not now. Now, I need to deal with...” I shook my head and took another step back.

Seff held onto my hand as I turned away. “Listen, in her own twisted, selfish way, Viveca cares for the twins. Under the stink of everything else she’s puttin’ off, I can smell it. There is love. Of course, she doesn’t love them enough to leave ’em be. If she did...” He squeezed my hand. “Des, you gotta know. She’s here to take them away.”

I nodded and sighed. “I know.”

He looked at me, his gaze dark and fierce. “Don’t lose hope, darlin’. She’s not the head of their line.”

“I know that, too. But Vera gave her babies to the pack because the head of their line demanded she give one up to her sister.”

I knew the twins were safe from Viveca for the moment, but it bothered me not to be in the same room with them. If Viveca attempted to snatch them up and make a run for it, she wouldn’t get far. Nevertheless, the trauma she would cause those two little females would never go away. Just the thought of Viveca being within arm’s reach of Arteisma and Nereida had my wolf bristling inside.

“Hey.” Seff squeezed my hand. “My uncle Ralph will be here soon. He knows wolf law. He’ll make sure that female knows it, too.” He pulled me closer and whispered against my lips, “Until then, I’ll make damn sure she ain’t touchingourtwins.”

As his kiss heated everything inside me, the icy air froze my tears as they seeped out from behind my eyelids.

CHAPTER NINETEEN

After the meal, Seffrefreshed everyone’s hot drinks while my dad cracked open a bottle of his favorite whiskey. I stayed in my seat at the table, Arteisma snuggled tightly into my right side, and Nereida sat stiffly on my left. Seff had given me a concerned look when he’d noticed I’d hardly touched my food. My stomach had felt too jittery to do much more than nibble.

The clink of dishes and silverware sounded loud against the quiet as Jessy washed and Dain rinsed. Viveca hadn’t returned after viewing Vera’s body. She’d insisted on going to her sister’s yurt, where my dad had left her. My dad hadn’t said if she’d been too distraught to come back to the cookhouse. As it was, it seemed no one wanted to bring up what we needed to do next, especially since the trucks that would eventually carry our deceased pack members away might not arrive for several hours.

Seff lifted Arteisma then sat down next to me, seating Arteisma at his side. He squeezed my hand, his calm strength flowed through our bond, easing some of my tension. His warmth filled me, and the anxious, fluttering feeling in my stomach subsided.
