“How did you know?” I asked.

He smiled and winked again.

When we got back to the SUV, Seff said, “Drive around back. I want to check something out.”

Several sets of dumpsters lined the brick wall behind the buildings.

Brutus rubbed at his nose and grimaced. “Damn, I smell it now. “

So did I.

Coppery. Sickly sweet. Near death.

CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

Seff, Brutus, and Deckerstood peering over the edge of the dumpster.

Was his body in there?

I didn’t need to see the evidence of what I’d done.

“All this is probably the stuff they stole from the pharmacy in Red Lodge,” Seff said.

I closed my eyes for a moment and exhaled a shuddering breath. Not a bloody body.

Brutus nodded. “He’s bleeding bad. Not healing.”

Lifting my chin, I held his scrutinizing gaze.

He squinted. “You didn’t give him just a little warning nip.”

Ice seemed to fill my veins as my wolf snarled, remembering how I’d injured the rogue. “No, I did not.”

I’d torn into him with fangs and claws. Made him bleed. Made him beg.

“Please. Please. Please. I don’t want to die.”

“I would do it again and again.” I stared into the Breeder’s dark eyes. “I will kill those who threaten what’s mine.”

A wide grin spread across Brutus’ face.

Seff stepped between us, his broad shoulders blocking Brutus from my view. His rough hand lifted my chin, forcing me to focus on him.

“Sakana, you did good.” He raised a dark brow and gave me a tight smile. Then, his lips came down on mine in a hard, bruising kiss of approval. Too quickly, he pulled away and stared into my eyes. His thumb brushed over my top lip and across my cheek. “The night we met, that bastard’s blood was on your face, on your neck. I promise when we catch him...” Another stroke of his thumb over my chin. Canines elongated behind Seff’s perfect lips as a low, vicious growl vibrated in his chest. He didn’t have to say the words.
