“Okay. About what?”

“Does it matter?”

I scoffed. “Considering what the outcome was, yes.”

“She’s late in paying the electricity…again.”

My mouth tightened into a thin line. “How often does this happen?”

Spencer shrugged. “I don’t know. Every few months.”

Now, my jaw clenched. “Has it ever been shut off?”

“A couple of times.”

“Why don’t you tell me these things? I can help.”

He scowled at me. “Because you shouldn’t have to. It’s not your home or your responsibility. It’s hers.”

“I know,” I said in a gentle voice. “But not holding our mother accountable for her actions means you suffer.”

“Like I said, it doesn’t happen all the time.”

I didn’t say anything more about Marjorie not paying the bills because I didn’t want to upset Spencer further. He already had too much to deal with as a sixteen-year-old.

“I’m letting it go.”For now. “Can you tell me what else happened?”

“Mom gave Mitch a load of cash to go to the liquor store.”

“Is Mitch the loser who was sitting in the living room this morning?”

Spencer smiled at my insult. “Yeah.”

“Got it.”

“Anyway, I reminded her she hadn’t paid the bill yet and that it was overdue. She ignored me, so I tried to take the money from Mitch.”

My spine straightened. “He didn’t do this to you, did he?”

Spencer snorted. “Mitch? No. He’s a piece of shit, but he pretty much lets Mom run the show.”

I relaxed a little. Because if Mitch had touched my brother, I wasn’t sure I would be able to not touch him back. And I would give him more than a broken arm.

“So, Mom didn’t like that. She needs her drinks, you know. And she got mad and pushed me as I was mid-step. I lost my balance and fell against the counter. I heard a snap, and I’m pretty sure Mom and Mitch heard it, too, because she started to cry and begged me not to call the police.”

And knowing my kindhearted brother, I knewhe’dfelt bad for her.

“She shoved some pills in my hand and told me to go sleep it off. And I was in so much pain that I just wanted it to go away.”

I wanted to yell and shake my mother. No amount of sleep was going to fix a broken arm.

I put my hand on Spencer’s good arm. “It’s okay. I don’t blame you. But please, if something like this ever happens again, call me.”

“I didn’t want to bother you.”

“I don’t care.” Okay, I kind of did. Having to suddenly leave Vivian when I was deep inside her would have sucked, but my brother meant more to me than sex. “You are more important to me. You’re my brother.”

“What’s going to happen now?”
