“Fuck.” I threw my hands up. “I don’t even know what to do.”

“I know you hate me right now, but will you please let me help? At least for your brother’s sake.”

“I don’t hate you, Vivian. I was just really mad that day. I’m sorry I came over like that. I wasn’t intending to fuck you like I did. I’ve never forgotten a condom before either. I wasn’t trying to scare you or prove anything, I swear.”

She smiled sympathetically. “I understand. And if I had wanted you to stop, I would have told you to. Calzone, remember?”

I snorted.

“But I’m on birth control, and I went and got tested. Everything is fine.”

I frowned. “Tested?”

She laughed as if I didn’t get the joke. “Dominick, I don’t know who or how many people you’ve been with.”

Is she serious?

She waved a hand back and forth. “But that’s not important right now. Immediately, we need to figure out what to do about your brother.”

“What do you suggest?”

“Since your mother is in the hospital, we should get an emergency hearing in front of a judge for you to be able to take temporary custody. Then, we get your brother out of juvie on bond at least. Last, we clear his name.”

I nodded slowly. “Okay.” Suddenly, a thought came to me. “But what if he did it?”

She sighed.

I pointed at her. “You know.”

“I can’t tell you anything, Dominick, but ask yourself if you think he did it. I think you can go with your gut on this. And once we get him into your custody, you’ll be able to speak to him freely.”

“I can’t go down to juvie and talk to him now?”

“Absolutely not. Everything is recorded. There is no expectation of privacy between brothers.”

“Even if you’re there?”

“I’m not going to be his lawyer.”

“Why not?” I tilted my head. “How did he know to call you anyway?”

“He heard us talking and knew I’d left my card. He memorized my phone number. Smart kid.”

I couldn’t help but smile. “Yeah, he is.” My face went serious. “That doesn’t tell me why you can’t be his lawyer.”

“You want someone with more experience than me. He’s looking at attempted murder or murder if your mother doesn’t make it.”

I never thought I would wish Marjorie would stay alive so hard.

“And it’s a conflict of interest.”

“Because you and I used to fuck?”

“Yes, that and…” She shook her head. “Just trust me. It wouldn’t work out.”

“But I want you to do it.”

She stepped forward and took my hand. “If you want me to help, I will. But I’d rather do it as your friend. And as your friend, I’m telling you, he needs a lawyer with more experience in these charges.”
