I shrugged and rolled my eyes. “I suppose I do.”

“So, why did you call it off?” Delaney asked.

“We are so different. And he was never supposed to be anything other than a—”

My phone buzzed on the table.

“D Appointment,” Rayne finished.

“How did you know?” I asked.

She grinned and pointed to my phone. “Because he just texted you.” She laughed. “You have his name asD Appointmentin your phone?”

“I told you, we were just having sex. And he put his name in like that on my phone, not me.”

“But you didn’t change it?” Rayne pointed out.

“What did the text say?” Delaney asked.

“Something about him getting a text and needing to talk to Vivian later.” Rayne’s eyes widened, and she fanned her face. “I don’t think I should say the rest out loud in public.”

She had to be teasing me.

“I don’t believe you.” Swiping my phone off the table, I opened my text messages.

D Appointment:I just got the craziest text. You and I need to talk later. My fucking cock is aching to be inside that sweet cunt of yours again.

“Let me see,” Delaney said, taking my phone out of my hand. She whistled. “He has got it bad.”

I snatched my phone back. “No, he doesn’t.”

“Why are you fighting this?” Delaney asked.

“I don’t know. We’re just so different. We come from separate worlds.”

Although learning that Dominick was a process server and did work for my firm had been very surprising, I wondered if the day I’d thought I saw him wasn’t just a figment of my imagination. But that was beside the point. We were still unalike in many ways.

“I don’t know how we’d ever work as a couple.” I sighed after saying the thing that had been bothering me all along. “At some point, he might realize he’s more fun and a lot cooler than me and get rid of my basic-bitch ass.” I scoffed. “Or I’m going to get sick of him not picking up after himself or doing the dishes. I’ve seen his house.” I shrugged. “And I’d rather not be around when that happens.”

Dominick

Tapping my foot,I waited impatiently for my brother. I hated that he was all alone and that I hadn’t been able to see him sooner.

When he came through the door, the look on his face when he saw me was worth the last two days of hard work.

I pulled him into a hug. “I came as soon as I could.”

Spencer stepped back, so we could sit. “I know. I was told that only parents and guardians were allowed to be here. I didn’t even expect to see you.”

I held out my hands. “Surprise. I’m your temporary guardian.”

“And all it took was for Mom to end up in the hospital.”

I raised my eyebrows.

He looked away. “I’m sorry.”
