The whole situation confused me, especially since we never had the “talk” he had texted me about. But maybe I had misunderstood the message he’d sent. And my every intention of talking to him had flown out the window as soon as I found out he and Gina weren’t involved. But it didn’t change that we had no defined relationship status, yet we were having unprotected sex almost every night.

But I knew why I hadn’t spoken up. I didn’t want him to go.

I’d done the unthinkable and developed feelings for Dominick Reyes.

Hard-core,I’d give up everything,I love youfeelings for a man who I’d never thought I’d fall for in a million years.

But all good things came to an end, and waiting for this fling we were having to come to a conclusion was starting to wear on me.

Tonight, I got off work at a decent time, and Dominick had said he’d meet me at my apartment for dinner. I thought I would beat him home, but I was surprised to find him standing in the living room when I got there.

His back was to me, so I set my purse and briefcase down and said his name. “Dominick.”

He spun around and put a finger up. He was on the phone.

“Yeah. Yeah.” He nodded and grinned. “Thank you. Yes. Tomorrow.” He pulled the phone away, hit End, and shouted, “Fuck yeah.”

“What happened?” I asked.

He slowly walked toward me, and with every step, he said a word. “The fire investigation is complete. No accelerants were found. The most likely cause was a cigarette.”

My hands flew up to my mouth. “Oh my God, Dominick, that is excellent news.”

“I know,” he said, reaching me and grabbing my hips. “I mean, I believed my brother when he said he didn’t do it. I just didn’t think it would be this easy to prove.”

I threw my arms around his neck and hugged him. “I am so happy for your brother.” I stepped back on my heels. “And you too, of course. This is amazing.”

“I know.”

“So, what happens now?”

“Howard said he is pushing the district attorney’s office to release Spencer right away. He could be out as soon as tomorrow. I don’t know what they’ll do about the vandalism charge, but that isn’t enough to hold him.” He met my eyes. “Right?”

“I would think not.” I sniffled. “That is such a relief.”

“Holy shit, Vivian, are you crying?”

“Of course not,” I said with a laugh, wiping a tear from my eye before it fell to my cheek.

Dominick laughed too. “I didn’t think you had it in you.”

“What?”

“Crying.”

“Ha-ha.” If he only knew. I’d bawled after I saw Gina at his house the morning I went to tell him about Spencer. And, now, I felt like crying again, knowing he was going to go back home to take care of his brother.

I was going to miss him.

He squeezed my hips and looked around. “What’s for dinner? Should we go out and celebrate?”

I didn’t know how long I was going to be able to keep on a happy face. Dominick was going to leave now that his brother was getting out of the juvenile detention center and would need a place to stay.

Their mother was improving, but it would probably be a couple more weeks before she got out of the hospital, and we had no idea if she’d get custody back right away or not.

It seemed this was the end of Dominick and me.

Suddenly, I was angry with myself for caring so much. I’d never felt this way with my ex, who I’d spent years with, and I shouldn’t feel this way now.
