And now, with my mother detoxing in the hospital, there was a chance she might stay sober. I knew it was a long shot, but one of the hardest steps was making it through the withdrawal period. Maybe once she did that, she would see how much Spencer needed her.

I sighed.Fuck. Everything was such a mess. And life definitely wasn’t fair.

The burned trailer proved that.

Because the very thing that could ruin my brother’s life could be the very thing that saved my mother’s.

I sat for way too long at my mother’s, ruminating in my thoughts. When I finally left, I realized how late it had gotten. I was sure that Vivian had gone to bed by now since tomorrow was a workday. I had to go back to my job myself. I didn’t know what else was going to come up, and I needed to save as many vacation hours as I could. It seemed our talk would have to wait for another day.

When I got to Vivian’s, I used the spare key I’d swiped that morning from her key hook in the kitchen to unlock the door and let myself in. This morning, I had wanted to make sure the door and the dead bolt were secured before I left since she was still sleeping. I had intended to give it back to her, but forgetting had come in handy.

I brushed my teeth with the toothbrush I had picked up on the way to her apartment and padded lightly to her room. There was enough light for me to see her sprawled out across the middle of the bed, and I smiled. For some reason, I pictured her sleeping neatly on one side of the mattress.

After stripping off my clothes, I climbed into bed with Vivian, only to frown at what I found there.

“Dom?” she asked in a sleepy voice as I tugged at her pajamas.

“Yeah?”

“What are you doing?”

Her bottoms went flying toward the wall with her top right behind it.

“Getting you naked, babe. When you sleep with me, there won’t be anything between us,” I explained, pulling her into my arms.

“That’s not what I—never mind,” she said and nestled her head on my chest.

“Just one more thing, and then you can go back to sleep.”

“Hmm?” she murmured.

I picked up her leg and drew it over my hip as I slowly pushed my stiff cock inside her beautiful cunt.

Perfect.

I ran my hand over the back of her head. “Just what I needed.”

And with that, I fell right asleep.

Before I knew it,a week had passed. Things were going well at work. I finally brought up the subject of me working with Delaney in the Women in Law program in front of Preston. Now that I had talked to her about it, I felt the need to speak with him as well.

He simply shrugged and said, “I kind of figured since she and the mayor are friends.” He looked over at me, eyebrows pulled together. “It’s not a problem, is it?”

I waved my hands back and forth in haste. “No. Not at all.”

“Good,” he said with a nod and pulled out a container of food and popped it into the microwave.

And that was the end of that. I had worried for nothing.

So, everything seemed normal from the outside. My job was going great, the Women in Law project was going well, and my sister had told me she was coming home to visit sometime soon, but for her, that could mean next week to six months from now. The only thing that didn’t make sense was Dominick spending every night in my apartment. I would almost say he’d moved in, except I didn’t see him much during the day.

He got up much earlier than me for work, and he was picking up overtime while I often worked late. Sometimes, I came home to him sleeping in my bed.
