She curled her lip. “We broke up.”

“I’m sorry. It’d better not be because of your weight or anything. I will hunt him down and—”

“Don’t be sorry. And, no, it wasn’t because of that. It was almost a worse reason, but I really don’t want to talk about it right now.”

I nodded in understanding.

“But, hey, we just ran into your man in the hallway. Things are going well, I take it?” Rayne said.

I smiled the kind of smile that only other women understood. “Yes.”

“I knew it,” Delaney said, and Rayne and I laughed.

“His brother is living with us as of right now, which is kind of different, but Spencer’s a great kid.”

Rayne smiled. “And to think, you said you didn’t like kids.”

“Ha. This is different. He’s a junior in high school, and he’s my brother-in-law. I mean, not really because Dominick and I aren’t married, but you get it. And thankfully, he understands that Spencer is going to be the only kid we raise.”

When I had brought up thenot wanting kidssituation with Dominick, I really hadn’t known which way it would go. Thankfully, he had shrugged and said he wanted what I wanted. He really was the best.

“How’s his mom?” Delaney asked.

“She’s still in the hospital, but she’s awake and sober.” I had filled Delaney and Rayne in on the whole situation. “She’ll probably be released soon to a nursing home to undergo some physical therapy due to the fire. Not sure when she’ll get to go home. Not that she has one yet.”

Delaney’s expression softened. “I hope everything goes well for Dominick and his brother. Kids like him are why I do what I do.”

“Me too. And the court is lucky to have you.” I held out my arms. “But this is it. I suppose you two didn’t see my previous office, but it was smaller than this one.” I had to make that clear because my new one wasn’t that big either. “And I’m getting my own assistant. I had to share before, so it’s kind of exciting.”

“I’m happy for you, Vivian,” Rayne said.

“I am too,” Delaney said.

“Thank you both.”

Delaney looked at her phone. “I suppose we should go.”

“Oh, yes. We should.”

I grabbed my purse, and the three of us headed for the elevator. When we were almost there, Preston St. James came around the corner, and he and Delaney both froze.

“Delaney,” he said, his face still in shock.

Her gaze dipped to the open collar of his white shirt. Preston was muscular and tan, and I could see why my friend had fallen for him.

She swallowed hard before hiking her purse up onto her shoulder and straightening her spine. “Hey, Pres.”

“What are you doing here?” he asked.

“I came to see Vivian’s new office.”

When Delaney turned in the direction of where we’d just come from, Preston’s eyes darted down to her ass, and fire flared in his eyes.

I scooted closer to Rayne and silently grabbed her arm. She nodded subtly.

She’d noticed it too.

Preston licked the corner of his mouth, but he seemed to realize where he was and who was in his presence, and he schooled his face just as Delaney turned back to him.
