Rayne and I immediately looked away, so he wouldn’t catch us watching him, but I should’ve been more careful because my eyes landed right on his crotch.

Holy shit. Preston St. James had a huge hard-on for his ex-wife.

I darted my eyes away again. I had never felt more awkward at my place of employment as I did at this moment.

Mercifully, Rayne came to the rescue. “Sorry to break this up, but we need to leave.” She stuck out her hand. “I’m Rayne Thompson.”

Preston shook it. “Preston St. James.”

Delaney cleared her throat. Her posture was stiff. Almost as if she was trying to keep herself from moving. “Rayne is right. We need to go. We have an appointment for Women in Law.”

“I heard that’s going well,” he said.

Delaney looked at me. I hoped she wasn’t upset I had talked about our project. He was my superior and the one who had assigned it to me.

“Yes, it is.”

Preston nodded. “Good. That’s good to hear.” He smiled politely at Rayne and me. “I’ll leave you to it then.” He stepped around us and disappeared down the hallway.

The three of us walked to the elevator without another word, but once the doors closed, Delaney collapsed against the wall.

“Delaney, I’m sorry to say this,” Rayne said, “but your ex-husband isfine.” She waved her hand against her face. “And the sparks coming off the two of you?Whew. Why the hell did you get a divorce?”

“You know earlier, when you said you didn’t want to talk about it?” Delaney asked.

Rayne nodded.

“That’s me now.”

“Got it.”

“I didn’t know seeing him was going to be so awkward.”

“But you must see each other all the time?” I said. Instantly, I held up my hand. “Sorry. You said you didn’t want to talk about it.”

“Paxton’s nanny brings him back and forth between the two of us. And before that, it was my ex-mother-in-law.” Delaney curled her lip at the mention of Preston’s mother. “I hadn’t seen him in months.”

The elevator doors opened, and she pushed herself forward.

“Looks like Delaney and I both have exes we don’t want to talk about,” Rayne said with a chuckle as we followed Delaney out.

“Yeah,” I agreed. “Maybe someday, you’ll both tell your stories.” I hoped so anyway.

“Maybe,” Rayne said. “But today is definitely not that day.”
