He seems disappointed, but maybe I’m reading into his texts too much, making more out of this than it really is. I also hate that he thinks I’m playing games. I’m really disappointed that I’ve had to cancel our mead making, and I hope he doesn’t do it without me.

Chapter Twenty-Four

Tommy

I flop back onto my pillow annoyed and disappointed. As weird as last night was and as much as I knew nothing was going to happen between Pen and me, I was looking forward to today and our experimental mead making…or to us totally fucking it up anyway.

But just as I think this, I’m hit with a sucker punch of hypocrisy over my behavior. Here I am, ready to overlook the age difference and wanting kids in five years thing with my online girl, but totally dismissing it the second I find out it’s Penny.

Penny, a woman I not only find insanely attractive, but also have great chemistry with and dare I say, a developing friendship that actually means a lot to me.

“Jesus, what the fuck is wrong with you?” I say to the empty room.

Groaning, I roll out of bed and into the shower, figuring I may as well head into work too, seeing as I’ve got nothing else going on today. I’m not going to make mead though, instead just do a couple of random jobs that need doing around the place.

God, I’ve clearly got no fucking life.

Just as I pull into the staff parking area at Somerville’s, my phone chimes out with a message. I grab my phone as I get out of the truck, expecting to see a text, but instead it’s a message on the Mystery Matchmaker app.

Scowling at my phone in confusion, I open the app, having no idea who it’s from given Wine Queen, or Penny as I now know, was the only person I was chatting with.

WineQueenFamilyTruckster: So weirdest first date you’ve ever had…Go!

I let out a hard laugh, glancing around and half expecting to see Penny standing somewhere, watching me. But the place is deserted, the winery doesn’t open for another thirty minutes.

Me: oh I’ve had a few, but my most recent one definitely takes the cake.

I throw in a couple of the hands up, what the fuck emojis, followed by the face palm one as I lean against the side of my truck, waiting for Pen’s reply.

WineQueenFamilyTruckster: Wow, you too? Same here…it was so…unexpected and kinda awkward and just not what I was thinking.

Me: So, a massive disappointment, then?

WineQueenFamilyTruckster: Actually, the complete opposite…although I was disappointed by how things all played out at the end…

I glance up again, a little confused by her response. Last night she told me she was done chasing and she wasn’t going to do that with me. Said this was on me and if I couldn’t see what we might have, then she wasn’t going to force it.

It left me both disappointed and frustrated when I’d expected to be relieved, especially as I was the one pushing for nothing to happen between us.

Me: in what way?

The bubbles pop up and disappear for ages, making me wonder just what the hell she’s going to say to me.

WineQueenFamilyTruckster: No happy ending…

I let out a cough, surprised and a little intrigued by her answer. Before I have a chance to write back though, I’m interrupted by Jack.

“Tommy, what are you doing here? Thought you had the weekend off?”

I slip my phone into my pocket as I glance up. “Pen got called into work, so the mead making is off,” I reply with a shrug, trying for casual.

Jack grins. “And so you thought you’d come into work too,” he says, crossing his arms over his chest.

I lift a shoulder. “I guess,” I reply, even as I realize how totally lame that sounds.

Jack chuckles. “To see Penny or…?” he trails off even as he rocks on his heels, that same shit-eating grin on his face.

“To get some shit done,” I reply, my words a little defensive.
