Hannah dissolves into laughter, shaking her head at me because she knows it gets me every time, which is why she keeps bringing it up. “Okay, whatever. So, how are you going to actually explain it to her?”

I shrug. “Yeah, that’s the part I’m not really sure about,” I admit. “I mean do I just come right out and say it or…?”

“Demonstration?” Hannah suggestions, laughing again.

I shake my head, reaching for another forkful of my sister’s breakfast. “You know you are such a pain in my ass.”

“Yeah, but you love me. Anyway, enough about you, have you found me a job yet?”

After breakfast, Hannah and I say goodbye and I jump in my car and head back to Napa, wondering if Tessa’s free and wants to hang out today. Even though we saw each other yesterday, I wasn’t kidding when I said I love hanging out with her. She’s funny and smart and just fun to be around.

Plus, let’s be real, she’s also hot as fuck.

When I get home, I head up to my apartment, trying to come up with a plan for what we could do when my phone chimes out with a text.

Tessa: Are you free tonight?

Me: You asking me out on a date???

Tessa: *eye roll emoji* …maybe…

Me: OMFG… YOU ARE! Does this mean you might actually like me???

Tessa: You know, cocky does look good on you, but there’s a time and place for it.

Me: Okay babe, whatever you say see how good I can be…but yes, I’m free tonight, what did you have in mind??

Tessa: Well….

Me: Yes???

The bubbles pop up and disappear several times as I stare at the screen, wondering what the hell she could possibly be typing that’s taking this long. Does she have some epic date planned out for us or is it something she’s worried I won’t be into. Honestly, as long as she’s there, I’m in.

Finally her message comes through.

Tessa: So you know how Lauren and Jack are staying with Tom and Pen?

Where is she going with this, I can’t help but wonder.

Me: Yes…and ?

Tessa: Well, they’ve asked us over to their house for dinner…as in you + me…I think Will and Ellen will be there too.

Me: Okay, sounds good. Want me to pick you up?

Tessa: Wait what, you’re okay with going?

Instead of texting her back, I scroll through to her number and hit redial.

“Hello?” she says on the first ring.

“Hey,” I say, smiling. “I thought it might be easier if we just talked.”

“Okay.”

Laughing, I take a seat at one of the stools at my kitchen island. “What’s wrong, Tessa, you seem, I don’t know, confused?”

“No, I’m just…I don’t know, surprised you’re okay with going over to their place for dinner.”
