“Spoken like a Cannon man,” Jenna said. “Where did you meet this lovely young woman?”

“Of all places, the wedding,” Tyler told her.

“Were you a guest?” Jenna asked. “I’m sure I would have remembered such a beauty.”

“No, we met in the lobby of the hotel,” Sammy explained.

“Tyler tried to pick her up,” Coda said. “Sammy was too smart for him.”

“Good for you.” Jenna tousled Tyler’s hair. “You have to watch him.”

“Hey.” Tyler backed away from his mother. “Don’t mess up my hair.”

“It doesn’t even look like you combed it,” Spencer said. “You need a haircut.”

“I’m not in the office,” Tyler reminded him. “And we were talking about how I met Sammy.”

“I never asked what you were doing in the hotel that night.” Spencer turned his attention back toward Sammy.

“I was playing a private reception.” Sammy felt bad about not telling the truth. When she told Tyler what she was doing there the night of the wedding, she didn’t think she’d ever see him again. How could she have known less than a month later she’d be standing at a ritzy gala with all of the Cannons?

“At the hotel?” Spencer asked.

Before she could answer, Jenna saved her from having to elaborate any further.

“Are you a musician?” she asked.

“I play the cello at the Brooklyn Conservatory,” Sammy said. “Sometimes I pick up work playing weddings and small affairs.”

“That’s impressive.” Jenna smiled. “My late husband was a musician as well as Spencer. Our family has such an appreciation for the arts.”

“Look.” Tyler nodded toward the main ballroom. “They’re letting us in.”

“Then I guess I’ll see you inside,” Jenna said. “Coda, we need to go bid on that bracelet we saw earlier.”

“We’ll meet you over there.” Tyler pointed toward the bar. “I want to get a drink before we head in.”

Sammy followed Tyler across the room and to a small bar set up in the corner.

“Your mom is fantastic,” she said. “She’s beautiful.”

“I knew she’d adore you.”

“How come?”

“Because I do.” He kissed the tip of her nose. “You look amazing tonight.”

“You told me three times already.” She giggled. “I don’t mind.”

“I’m sure I’ll tell you several more times before the night is through.”

“I think you look pretty hot yourself, Mr. Cannon.” She placed her hand on his chest. “I like when your hair is messy. It’s sexy.”

“Hmm, then I guess Spencer is going to have to put up with it at the office too.” He smirked the way he did when he was being devious. “I’ll kill two birds with one stone.”

“What do you mean?”

“I’ll impress my main girl and I’ll piss my brother off. It’s a win-win.”
