“I wouldn’t object to Julian punishing me, but I don’t think we’ve gone far enough for me to warrant it. That time you spoke of I went to his club when he asked that I didn’t. I was listening to a friend when I should have been more mindful of what Julian would want.”

“The same friend who later betrayed you?”

“Julian has filled you in on a lot.”

“It was the only way I could ensure that I could help you.”

Kayla glanced around the room, noticing a picture on Martin’s desk of him and a beautiful woman. She was dressed in a wedding gown and Martin wore a tuxedo. He had a huge smile and appeared happy and content in the photo. Not at all the intimidating Dominant who stood before her tonight. Martin followed her gaze.

“Is she your sister?”

“Gracie?” He focused on the photo. “No, she’s a very dear friend. I gave her away at her wedding. She trained with me for a few years. In some ways, you remind me of her when she first came to me.”

“How so?”

“She was very new to this lifestyle, but she was so eager to learn. She wanted to be a true submissive for a man she loved deeply, but he was afraid of his dominance. He turned her away because he thought he was doing the right thing for her. Instead, she came here and sought me out. She wanted me to teach her so she could be everything he needed.”

“Like I’m doing for Julian?”

“In your case, you and Julian are on this path together. Cade and Gracie led separate lives until I felt she was ready to go to him and show him all that she had learned.”

“Is that something you do often? Train women for other men?”

“Gracie was an exception to many of my rules. If Cade would have rejected her, I would have accepted her with open arms.” He picked up the photo and studied it with a longing in his eyes. “I did what was best for her. I always will.”

“You love her.”

“It surprised me too.” He gazed up at her as he put the picture back on his desk. “She was not meant to be mine. We served a purpose in one another’s lives. She will always hold a place in my heart, but I could never be who she needed.”

“That sounds kind of tragic.”

“I’m a better man for having her in my life.”

“Is that why you don’t have a submissive now?”

“I haven’t found anyone I’m compatible with.”

“In this entire club of subs there isn’t one?”

“That isn’t a bad thing,” he said. “It keeps me available for you and Julian. I’m rather enjoying assisting you. I’m curious to see what the future holds for you both.”

“Do you think we’re capable of making both lives work? A normal one and a kinky one?”

“I think it will take some work, but you both seem committed enough to try.”

“Is that what you wanted with—”

“Hey.” Julian knocked on the frame of the door. “Sorry I’m late.”

“Julian.” She hopped off the couch and launched herself into his arms.

He held her close, kissing the side of her face as she clung to him, her feet dangling from the floor.

“I missed you,” she whispered.

“Me too.” He kissed her slowly before placing her on her feet.

“Julian,” Martin said. “I’m glad you made it.”
