He answered the door, greeting Martin as he came inside, holding an expensive bottle of scotch. “I thought you could use a drink.” He held it up. “I’ll join you.”

“Come in.” They walked down the hall and into the kitchen. “You didn’t have to come over tonight.”

“I disagree.” He took a seat at the table as Julian brought over two glasses. “I promised you my guidance. That doesn’t end when you leave the playroom. There are many aspects to this lifestyle. Aftercare is an important part of it.”

“Kayla and I talked. She understood where she went wrong. She accepted responsibility and I’m certain she’s not going to call you by your name ever again. She’s fine.”

“I didn’t doubt that for a second,” Martin said. “I came to check on you.”

“Why?” Julian filled the glasses. “I appreciate it, but you didn’t have to do that.”

“Kayla has you. It’s your responsibility to make sure she’s okay after a scene. As your mentor it’s my responsibility to make sure you’re okay.”

“The chastisement. That was for my benefit.” Martin could easily have done it himself. They had discussed that in the limits before they ever stepped foot in the playroom.

“She did disobey me.” He sipped his scotch. “But, yes, I wanted you to punish her. It was time. Not that I wanted her to fail tonight, but I’m glad it happened.”

“You warned her of the consequences.” Julian took a seat at the table. “She understood.”

“I came here because you’ve been off. I sensed it on the phone last night when you arranged for a session. I probably shouldn’t have let you go that far, but she had to pay a consequence, and I didn’t think I should be the one to do it. We were in a controlled environment and I could have stepped in if I thought your head wasn’t in the game. You displayed a strong command over her.”

“Kayla had my full attention tonight. I would never have entered that playroom if I didn’t think I had her safety as my number one priority.”

“I know you would never do anything to jeopardize her, but you’re not yourself.” He leaned back in the chair. “Do you want to tell me what’s wrong?”

“It’s not Kayla, if that’s what you’re concerned about. We’re fine. She’s fine.”

“You’re not fine.”

“I had an unpleasant encounter with an ex-partner.” Julian had tried to put Angelina’s stunt out of his head, but the more he thought about it the more disturbing the whole thing seemed. Maybe telling Martin what had happened would help him deal with the situation.

“A sub?”

“Sort of.” Julian poured more scotch into his glass. “We ended things a while ago. We weren’t compatible. I thought she had accepted that. Then she came back here looking to start again. I explained I was in a relationship and didn’t need a sub.”

“She’s still interested?”

“She staged a scene last night. I walked in and she expected me to finish it.”

“That’s quite disturbing.” Martin finished his drink. “Does this sub frequent my club?”

“She’s been there a few times and has admitted seeing me and Kayla with you.”

“Confidentiality shouldn’t be an issue. I’ll make sure that is reiterated to all my patrons, and if you want me to set this woman straight, I’ll do that.”

“I told her there was no way I could ever be with her. She needed to stop whatever delusions she had of the two of us.”

“But you’re bothered by it.”

“I didn’t tell Kayla.”

“I see.” Martin wrapped his hand around his glass, as a disappointed expression came over him. “Any reason why?”

“I’ve been under so much stress at work. The ex-sub is the senior partner’s granddaughter. He’s assigned her to work with me. It’s a mess.”

“I hear excuses.”

“You’re right.” He rested his chin in his hand, not expecting Martin to go easy on him. “I’m sheltering Kayla.”
