Chapter 6

Parker

That was a damn close call. If I hadn’t gotten Coach so worked up, he probably would have been able to see the very top of Birkley’s head. We quickly get dressed and start for the door, but I step out first and look around. I want to make sure Coach didn’t hang around, or there aren’t any other teachers or kids hanging around.

I see Griffin walking our way and head in his direction. He has my gym bag slung over his shoulder, and I know he must have either heard or seen what happened. When he makes it to us, I grab it as he hands it my way.

“I saw y’all heading this way and saw what happened. I went to your locker and got your gym bag. It might be big, but I know you at least have a clean shirt in there for Birkley,” he tells me before turning to Birkley with soft eyes. “I’m so sorry about what happened to you, Birkley. We’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Birkley peaks out from behind me and smiles shyly up at him, “Thank you, Griffin.”

He gives her a nod and a short smile before giving me a nod and walking back toward the school. I set my bag down and dig through it, pulling out my oversized shirt.

“Do you want to go change in the bathroom? That way, you’re at least dry?” I ask, handing her the shirt.

“I have a pair of yoga pants in my locker. Can we stop by there on the way?” she asks me, giving me a small smile.

“Yeah, baby, of course. What class do you have to get to now?” I ask, grabbing her hand and heading to her locker.

“Homeroom is over, but we do nothing in that class anyway. I have Biology, Calculus, Economics, and then band after lunch,” she tells me. I nod, memorizing her schedule, knowing I will have to figure out some way to waste some time during her classes.

At this point, it's an unspoken rule my brothers and I are graduating. These people just want us the fuck out of this place. They don’t care if we succeed or not. They don’t care if we learned shit within these four walls. Luckily, we always have each other.

We learned early on that we would have to teach ourselves most of this shit. Even in grade school, teachers just overlooked us. After our sophomore year, we were just tired of it. I’m fucking fantastic at math. Numbers come easy to me, so we got our books, and I helped tutor the guys. Griffin has a thing about English and grammar. It's one of my shortcomings, but he’s fucking amazing, so he helped us all there. We each took turns learning and teaching each other. None of us were made for college, but we got by and could pass any of the classes at this school given a chance. We make it to Birkley’s locker, and I wait while she opens it up. She quickly grabs her pants, then makes her way to the restroom.

I wait in the hall, leaning against the locker while Birkley changes. She hadn’t been in the bathroom two minutes when Kim and Chloe, the two bitch ass cheerleaders who tortured my girl, came walking past. When they realize it's me leaning against the locker, they stop and smile coyly over at me. I roll my eyes, right there for them to see.

“Parker, I haven’t seen much of you lately,” Kim coos. She barely sees me at all. I try my damndest to stay away from every fucking popular piece of shit in this place. Bailey is the exception. She may be popular, but she has one of the biggest hearts I've ever known. I say nothing to them, I just turn my head to look down the hall.

“So, we graduate soon. Why don’t we get to know each other…. Intimately before school ends,” Kim says, stepping up and putting her hand on my forearm.

“Get. Your. Fucking. Hands. Off. Me.” I say slowly, enunciating every word. The stupid bitch doesn’t take the hint. She’s lucky she isn’t a man. I know for a fact she was the instigator of the incident with Birkley this morning.

“Come on, there is the field house. It's always empty this time,” she says, sliding closer. I side step her, shaking off her hold.

“I said don’t fucking touch me. My girl will be out any second. She takes care of all my fucking needs and more. ONLY her,” I say, moving closer to the bathroom.

“Who’s your girl?” she seethes at me. I know it's her pride. She opens her legs for everybody, and no one in this school turns her ass down. Well, except my brothers and me.

“That would be me,” Birkley says just above a whisper behind me. Her words may be low, but they are powerful. Her back is straight, and she walks right up to me and places her hand on my chest. I smile down at her.

“Hey, kitten.” I say before leaning down and whispering in her ear, “show her your fucking claws.”

“Oh, you have got to be kidding. Her?” Kim says, laughing as Chloe joins in.

“Of course her. I have a rule against fucking with spoiled little girls trying to play grown. I want a real woman, and Birkley fills that role perfectly,” I tell them, smiling down at my girl.

“Fuck…” Kim starts, but we are all cut off when we hear yelling coming down the hall.

“Where the hell is she? I swear I will junk punch all those bitches for what they’ve done to Birkley,” Juju says, racing down the hall, screeching. She looks fucking crazy, and it would be hilarious if not for the reminder of why she’s so mad.

“Baby, calm down. Griffin said Parker has her. I promise she is fine,” Brody says, trying to grab her and calm her down, but she is on the warpath.

“If I were you, I would run. She looks like she’s ready to do some damage,” Birkley tells the girls. They glare at her for only a second, but Juju lets out something close to a war cry, and they scurry away.

“I WILL FIND YOU!” she screams after the girls’ retreating backs.

“Calm down, Liam Neeson,” I laugh, letting go of Birkley’s hand as Juju pulls her into a tight hold.

“I’m so sorry I wasn’t there. I should have met you at your locker this morning. I’m a horrible friend,” Juju says. I can hear the torture and guilt in her voice.

“It's fine, Juju. I know you rode in with Brody and had to get to the auditorium early. Besides, Parker was there,” Birkley says, stepping back from her and into my arms. Nothing in the world has ever felt so right.

“Oh, Parker was there, huh?” she asks, trying to look stern, but I can see the tilt of her lips. She’s holding back a smile.

“Well, Parker better be on his best behavior. I’m coming for you next if you hurt her,” she warns me. I smile at her, knowing that’s not possible.

Birkley doesn’t even realize how all in I am… but I’m going to have a hell of a time showing her.
