“No,” he replied. “You're invested personally, and you should know how that goes. I want this handled quietly before Kaleem returns with Diana and Hope.” He sighed. “This shit just had to happen under my watch.”

I didn't object. This was my job, or it used to be, so I knew how dangerous a conflict of interest could be. Still, this involved Marian, and I wouldn't have the matter wholly taken out of my hands.

"Fine, but I need to know everything that's happening, Killian. Isaac's too close to Marian for comfort."

"I know," he replied. "I'll look into the vamp, find out who he is, and in the meantime, keep an eye on Marian. If Isaac did this, we wouldn't have to hunt him down. He'll come straight to us for Marian."

"That sounds like using her for bait," I said, and he turned away.

"No," he called over his shoulder. "That's exactly what vampires do when they've marked someone, and you know that. I was only stating a fact because, like it or not, if he’s marked her, he'll be watching her, so you must do the same."

I watched him leave before returning my attention to the dead animal. It would seem my peaceful retirement wasn't going to be so peaceful after all.
