He was such an incredible man, I thought while walking through the town, a bag of Indian take-out in hand. He was going to pick me up in half an hour, and I was already expecting him to have a problem with me leaving to get food, but I doubted Isaac would attack me in the middle of the town.

It was only 5 pm, so the town was bright enough with the setting sun.

More importantly, it was nice being looked after by Dorian, but I also wasn't used to it. I wasn't used to depending on others, and it was a little stifling, although he tried to give me as much space as I needed.

Walking through the town, seeing familiar faces, and taking a moment to return to normalcy felt great. How crazy was that? Lack of appreciation sometimes made people want more, and once they got precisely what they wanted, it turned out to be too much.

I was sick of normalcy a few weeks ago, and now, I craved it.

“Hey,” I nodded when a Djinn, who moved to town five years back, exited his car on the curb.

“Hey, Marian,” Ahmed waved, his brown skin covered in golden markings like lines edged into stone, so while I'd never touched a Djinn before, it was said the markings felt like ridges.

Djinn were Arabian supernatural creatures, and although there were various sub-species, some being good and bad, all Djinn tended to get a bad name as tricksters. Like Isaac, Ahmed didn't get a warm welcome when he arrived. No one knew who he was and what his presence might bring, but he turned out to be a great guy and a therapist.

I hadn't thought of it much before, but Wolfcreek’s flaw was the lack of trust its inhabitants had at times.

I continued on my way, a few minutes left to get back to the supermarket and get ready for Dorian to pick me up. When I glanced across the street, I did a double-take and stopped in my tracks.

Isaac was standing there, wearing a black jacket and a black hoodie over his head. It was him, though, without a doubt. He looked as sickly as before, and he was watching me.

My heart started racing, and his lips curved with a sinister smile that sent a chill surging through my body. He looked so different, not just paler than usual, but his entire appearance lost its welcoming appeal.

A bus drove by, severing our stare-off, and when it passed, he was gone.

I looked everywhere, searching for him, but he'd vanished. I started walking, my heart still racing while looking for him until I picked up speed to get to the supermarket as quickly as possible.

When I spotted a man in a black jacket and a hoody ahead, his back to me, I gritted my teeth. I felt a spark of anger, and while Dorian had said Isaac wouldn't listen to reason, I wasn't going to be stalked and forced to live in fear.

Fuck that!

“Isaac!” I shouted and started running. “Isaac!”

I ran through the people coming towards me and those heading in the same direction, pushing them out the way if I had to, but one minute Isaac was there—the next, I blinked, and he was gone.

I stopped running, panting as if I'd run a mile. I didn't care that everyone was staring at me with concern. They had no idea what I was feeling right now. I was scared but also angry and concerned for him.

Dorian told me of the burden tamed vampires carried, and I wanted to help Isaac. I needed to get to him before he vanished, use myself as bait to catch him because who knew what he was doing out here, what he was feeding on, or who.

"Shit," I hissed while turning in a circle, and behind me, I noticed a photo lying on the ground.

Bending to pick it up, I froze when I saw that it was a polaroid photo of me, dressed in a cream dress with pale yellow floral patterns, the dress I was wearing right now. I picked it up, turning in a circle once more, and this time I felt there wasn't much need for speculation.

This picture was just taken of me, and all signs pointed to Isaac. There was no more room for speculation, I was marked, and he was coming for me.

Dorian had warned me, and although I'd taken the situation seriously, I just faced reality, and that reality was tall, pale, and had fangs for teeth.
