I was enjoying this, of course, and I added a little sway while walking to the front door.

“Marian wait, Nikoli’s calling," Dorian called, and I stopped. “Son? Is everything okay?” he asked, when he answered, before Nikoli could speak.

He was holding the phone up to his face, so I assumed it was a video call.

Nikoli’s laugh echoed from the phone and a few other voices. "Hey Dad, I told my friends that every time I call, you say the same thing, every single time.” I laughed. “I just made a thousand bucks, thanks.”

A thousand dollars for a bet among high school kids was ridiculous, I thought to myself before remembering where Nikoli was. It was a school for the wealthy. Hence how secure it was.

Dorian shook his head. “Glad I could be of service.”

“Wait,” Nikoli said, and Dorian looked at me. "Why are you dressed like that? Are you going out? Are you going out with Marian?"

I looked down my heart swelling. It was touching that right away, Nikoli was thinking of me.

"Say hi," Dorian turned the phone to me, and I waved.

"Hey, kiddo," I said, and Nikoli, sitting in a chair, rocked back, his hands on his head.

His mouth was hanging open, but his sheer happiness was loud enough. He grabbed his phone, and Dorian and I watched while he moved to another room.

"Are the two of you together again? You're back together, right, and not just going to a pack dinner or something?" His face came closer to the phone. "How long has this been going on? I was just there, and you two didn't seem to be on great terms, understandably."

“Nikoli,” Dorian laughed. “Take a breath.”

"We've been—talking," I said while looking up at Dorian, and he gazed down at me, and while he didn’t know this, now I was ready because of Nikoli. The final piece to our family was Nikoli, and now I was ready. "But yes, we're back together, officially."

“It’s about time! I’m coming home!” Nikoli shouted, and Dorian shook his head.

"You have exams coming up," Dorian said without missing a beat. "Then you'll be here for the holidays. So, how about you focus on those exams, ensure you get good grades, and we'll see about that car you asked for."

Nikoli visibly went pale. “Don’t play like that, Dad. Are you serious?”

Dorian nodded. "Yes. You'll be graduating and going to college soon. You'll need a car, but I'm picking which, something practical and well-made.”

Nikoli folded his lips, his cheeks and ears turning red. “You know, I was just studying.”

I laughed.

I missed this.

“Plus, I can tell when I’m being blown off,” Nikoli smirked. "It's fine, I'll give you two your time together.”

His brows wiggled, and I shook my head.

"Alright," I pointed at him. "Enough of that, but I can't wait for you to come home, kid. I'll see you soon, okay."

“Okay, Marian,” Nikoli waved. “You look beautiful.”

"Thank you," I said, and he and Dorian talked for a few more minutes before the call ended, but before it did I hear Nikoli's final words.

"I'm glad things are back to normal, Dad," Nikoli had said. “I’ll be home soon.”

We got in his car, and before driving off, Dorian reached over and held my hand.

“So, we’re officially back together?” he asked. “Is that so?”

I shrugged. “I think so. Don’t you?”
