What if he mistook Isaac for Ian?

“Don’t call me brother,” Ian hissed. “I’m not your brother, not anymore. You dragged me to this fucking place. You kept me in the forest for weeks, making me detox all the blood I ingested."

“You asked for my help,” Isaac groaned.

"Yes!" Ian advanced on him, and I thought he would attack Isaac. "You said we'd start over! You said you'd help me!"

"It was the truth," Isaac finally held his head up. "You were clean. You were feeding on nothing but animal blood. You were getting clean, brother."

Ian laughed. “Yes, until I smelt her on you.” Ian leaned on the wall and wagged his finger at me. “You know, Marian, you don’t know him like I do.”

I said nothing.

"You probably think I'm a monster, don't you? I mean," he laughed. "I am but this guy," he slapped Isaac's cheek. "He's worse."

Ian walked away, frowning. “He and I used to be feared, Marian, fearedand him more than me. Being bastard twins born to a royal female made us outcasts among the royals until we earned our place.”

He started laughing again. "We showed them, didn't we brother? Even some royals feared us. We became kings in our own right until you fucked it up!”

Ian walked to me, grabbed the arm of my chair, and yanked me to him. I screamed, and he stooped beside me, hushing me to be quiet, and I bit down on my lip. I wouldn't make it out of here if Dorian didn't hurry.

Ian was crazy! He was clearly unhinged, and this was a family thing that I was being dragged into.

"Isaac was feared more than I was," Ian whispered. "Look at him."

I didn't. I was holding back tears. I could smell the blood on Ian's breath.

“Look!” He shouted, and I did. There was an apology in Isaac’s stare, which was enough to prove what Ian was saying was true. “He’s killed millions, millions, Marian. Some for fun, some for a good cause during the war against the humans, but do you want to know what they called him? What they called us?”

"Ian, stop," Isaac growled, and Ian hissed at him.

“Why? Doesn’t she deserve to know, huh? Look at you!” Ian stood up. “This isn’t you! This is some fake person you made! You suddenly felt you were better than me, better than your true nature and who you were born to be! You ruined us!”

"We were in with the royals. We were loved, feared! I had everything, and you took it all when you left and fell for that fucking human!"

I was so confused, but I kept my mouth shut. So Isaac left his old life behind, and Ian now hated him for it? What did any of this have to do with me?

"Oh, wait," Ian laughed. "You don't know what I'm talking about, Marian? Well, let me tell you. There was another like you," he crouched down, his arms dangling between his legs. "Exactly like you really, mixed-race, friendly, brown eyes and thick hair. Her name was Marissa, funny, right? Marian and Marissa, this guy certainly has a type, and he was going to make her his mate.”

“She came between us. You understand?” Ian smiled sadly as if he was a victim in all of this. He was a psycho! “Isaac would have marked her, stepped away from the life he and I created, and robbed me of everything I’d worked so hard for. So I turned her and killed her.”

Isaac was staring daggers at Ian, and I could see his pain. How could Ian do such a thing to his own brother?

"We're hundreds of years old, Marian," Ian hissed. "We've been together all our lives, and she wanted to take him from me. She changed him and made him want to be—better, as if there was anything better than being a vampire. We weren’t untamed. You need to understand that, Marian. We were just powerful, but there couldn't be one without the other, or that power would be gone."

Ian stood up, and when I looked at Isaac, the rims of his eyes were red. Vampires didn't cry tears, I knew that much. They cried blood. Isaac fell for a woman like me, and Ian thought the same was happening now.

He was going to kill me in front of Isaac.

"Isaac and I are only friends," I whispered, and Ian bent his head like an owl. "I have a boyfriend, Ian. He's a werewolf."

"Oh, I know," he laughed and turned to Isaac. "See? I told you? She's got a wolf boyfriend. Can you imagine him fucking her?"

Isaac looked away, and so did I. This was cruel. This was twisted and evil.

"Oh, come on, Isaac. I know it pisses you off," Ian whispered. "She'll never be yours, but there it is. No matter that Marian belongs to a wolf, you still love her, and I can’t have that.”

My eyes widened.
