Chapter 19 - Marian

The throbbing in my head grew more intense, and I opened my eyes, groaning from the pain. My head was spinning, and my eyelids felt like lead, but as I blinked slowly, I could see the ropes wrapped around me.

It explained why I couldn't move my arms, and panic set in.

I tried to move but felt lethargic, like waking up after sleeping for too long. My mind was foggy until I looked up and saw Isaac bent at the waist while staring at me.

I held my breath, staring into his red eyes until they faded to their normal color, and I recalled what happened and how I ended up here.

While staring into his eyes in the bathroom, he’d commanded I get out of the stall, and I obeyed. I knew I shouldn't have, that I was in danger, but I couldn't stop myself. He gave a command, and I had to follow as if I was under a spell, so when he ordered me to follow him, I did.

I'd wanted to scream for Dorian, to run to him, but Isaac was somehow controlling me, and I couldn't break free. Once outside, I got into a car with him, and he covered my nose and mouth with a cloth.

I could still smell the chloroform he’d used to knock me out. At least he'd done that instead of biting me, but when I stepped out of the stall, the bastard grabbed me by my hair. I remembered that.

“You’re awake, finally,” he smiled wide and flashed his fangs.

"What did you do to me?" I grumbled. "Untie me, Isaac."

He stood up straight, his hands in his pockets. “It was just a little compulsion, Marian, nothing bad. I needed to get you out of there and quickly. It was either that, or I kill everyone and take you by force.”

“Don’t worry,” he waved a hand. “Only two guards died.”

I started wiggling to get free. "Untie me! Untie me, Isaac!"

"Isaac, Isaac, Isaac!" he shouted, and I stopped.

His eyes flashed red, and I leaned back, but there wasn't anywhere I could go when he bent, so his face was inches away from mine. He said nothing, he just stared at me, and I stared back until I noticed it.

It was subtle, very subtle, but his eyes were different. When we'd met, the color was a little lighter.

"You're not Isaac," I whispered, and Isaac—or the man pretending to be him, grinned.

He stood up, slow clapping until he was applauding and cheering. “She finally figured it out!”

What the hell was going on? I thought to myself. Was he a shape-shifter? Was this like the story Dorian told me of the organ traffickers? Was this what Dorian tried to protect me from by ending our relationship, and after all these years, I was about to be killed as revenge anyway?

“Who are you?” I asked. “What did you do to Isaac?”

He stopped clapping, his upper lip twitching with disgust, and he stepped aside.

I sucked in a breath of shock. Isaac was nailed to the wall, both legs and feet with silver straps around his ankles and wrists. He looked thinner than the last time I saw him, which would have been the day Dorian was at the supermarket.

“What have you done to him?” I hissed. “Who are you?”

“His younger brother, Ian, younger by five minutes,” he shrugged. “It’s nice to officially meet you. Funny how he didn't tell you he had a twin brother. I thought you were friends?”

Twins, they were twins. Ian smiled and then grimaced in seconds. He shook his head while turning to Isaac, and I looked from one man to the next. They were completely identical, except for Ian's roguishness and sallow-looking skin. At this point, he was starting to look grey.

“Let her go,” Isaac said so low I’d almost missed it.

I sat up or as much as these damn ropes would let me, and Ian started laughing. He continued laughing, choking, and laughing some more until it stopped. I grimaced when he bit his arm, and blood spilled down his arm to the ground.

What the actual hell was happening?

"Let her go, brother," Isaac said again, his head still hung with his chin touching his chest, but he looked up a little.

He looked at me, and my chin began to tremble. I hadn't been wrong about him, but now Dorian would have noticed I was gone, and since Ian killed two guards and abducted me, Dorian was going to kill him on sight.
