“You’re going to be a brother,” Dorian shouted, their eyes glowing and Nikoli rushed to join us.

Like Dorian, he touched my belly, but we explained the situation to him. His and Dorian's joy was all I needed to put my last ounces of worry to rest. This baby would be so loved, protected, and cared for.

“This was all I’d hoped for,” Nikoli said, his face a little red with all the joyous laughter, but he also looked awash with emotion. "I prayed that now that you're back, Dad, the two of you would get back together. I just wanted my family back, and now… now I'm going to be a big brother."

"I want to take a year off, Dad, and be here in the pack. After a year, I'll go to college, but I want to be here, with the two of you, with my baby brother or sister, please.” He turned to me. “Please, Mom, I want to stay.”

I hugged him.

I hugged Nikoli so tight I wished it was enough for him to feel how much I loved him. I'd told him as a child that calling me mom would be entirely up to him and that no matter what, I loved him.

I didn’t need the label mom, my love for him was what mattered, but to hear him say it, after all these years, I was overcome with joy.

“Of course, son,” Dorian said, his voice heavy with emotion. “You can take a year off.”

“I love you,” Nikoli said, his voice muffled in my hair. “Both of you.”

“I love you too, Nikoli. I've always loved you, and you've always been my son. You're going to be such a great brother, and we're going to be a family like we were before. I promise you we won't part again. I swear it! We’ll be making up for lost time starting now.”

A knock came at the door, and Nikoli and I pulled away. I wiped his tears, my beautiful first child, and Dorian said he'd get the door while sniffling. When I heard an onslaught of rushed Spanish, I stilled, and Mom stepped into the kitchen.

“Surprise, Princesa!" she exclaimed with her dark hair like mine to her waist. "I know, you said you'd come to Mexico, but I missed home, I missed you."

She hugged me and then Nikoli.

“Ay dios mio, kid, you're huge. Why are you crying?" my mom, a whirlwind of energy, finally stopped to realize we were all in tears, and she placed the tequila bottle she was holding on the island. "What's going on?"

She didn't know about the ordeal with Ian. She'd have a heart attack. I'd tell her eventually, but I did tell her Dorian, and I was back together. I suppose that was what the tequila was for, to celebrate, although it was water to wolves.

When Dorian wrapped his arms around me from behind, I grinned. "You guys will have to enjoy that tequila without me.”

Dorian held my belly, and I covered his hand. Mom's eyes fell to our hands, and I covered my ears, as did Dorian before she started screaming, but we knew it was coming.

This was my family. They were protective, loving, wild, and the most remarkable people I knew. I had nothing to worry about, and neither did the little one inside me. We were going to be okay. We had the best people on our side.
