“I did it!”

“You sure did!”

“I was like Rafe and I didn’t give up!”

She grinned at him, knowing that it would give Rafe such a kick to be the inspiration for Billy’s success.

“Can I go again?”

“Yes!” She helped him up and off he went again, each time managing to go longer and longer between falls. She judged that he’d finally had enough when he struggled to get up because his legs were like jelly. “How about we take a break.”

“Okay.” She knelt in front of him to help with the board. “I love you, Mikky,” he said, holding onto her shoulder while she took his feet out of the clips on the board.

God, he was such an adorable little heartbreaker. “I love you, too.”

“I love Rafe.”

Oh, weird segue, but okay. “I love Rafe, too.”

“I know you do. Your colors are different. They’re so pretty now.”

Mikayla had long since accepted Billy’s ability to read auras and discern how people were feeling. “Oh, so they weren’t pretty before?” She asked in a teasing tone, ignoring the little flutter of anxiety she felt in her belly.

“They were before, but they’re very bright now.” His smile was angelic. “I like them even more now. There’s Rafe! I’m gonna tell him I did it!”

Rafe came gliding down the slope with his goggles up, his eyes finding Mikayla’s through the crowd of skiers and snowboarders. She felt a little breathless, rubbing at her chest as her heart skipped a few beats.

“Hey.” He pulled to a stop in front of them, reaching down to undo the clips on his board.

“Hi.”

“Rafe! I did it!”

“No way! Did you?” Mikayla smiled as Billy, nodding enthusiastically, regaled Rafe with the story of his own experience learning to snowboard. “I’d completely forgotten about that.” He smiled at Mikayla, reaching out to push a strand of hair behind her ear. There was that heart lurching feeling again. “What’s the matter?”

“Huh?”

“What’s up? You’re frowning.”

“Am I?” She schooled her features, forcing herself to smile again. “Just a bit glary out here, I guess.”

“Right. You wanna head back to the chalet?”

“I do!” Billy said.

“Let’s go then. I’ll make you a hot chocolate.” Mikayla grabbed her and Billy’s boards and they started across the snowfield. They hadn’t gone more than ten steps though, when Billy stopped and sighed. “What is it, mate?”

“My legs don’t wanna walk anymore.”

Without a word, Rafe scooped Billy up in his arm, trying to juggle the unwieldy snowboard at the same time. “Give me that,” Mikayla said, reaching for it.

“You sure?”

“Of course.” She pulled it out of his hand, tucking all three boards under her arm, gesturing for him to go ahead. She fell into step behind him as they stepped off the snowfield, walking between a narrow stand of trees to the track that led to their house. She heard Billy sigh as he wrapped his arms around Rafe’s neck and dropped his head on his shoulder.

“Tired, mate?”

“Yeah.”
