“Well, when you put it like that, it does sound a bit stupid. But let’s be honest, you were being a weird asshole too. And it pretty much started after we had sex in the shower at Thredbo.”

She thought about that for a long moment. “Yeah, maybe, but it wasn’t about that,” she said quietly.

“What was it about then?”

She hesitated.

“Full disclosure, Mik, if we’re gonna sort this out.”

She looked away at the rain that had turned into a heavy downpour. “I think I might want a baby,” she said, so softly that he had to lean forward to hear her.

“Oh, I see,” he said after a long moment. She sent him a fleeting glance, but his face was inscrutable. “So, this whole time you were being a weird asshole to me because you were clucky?”

“It’s not funny. Okay, maybe it’s a bit funny. But I feel restless and edgy.” She sighed. “I think, yeah, my ovaries are dancing.”

“That’s amazing.”

“Not really.”

“Yes, it is, but we’ll get back to that. I have something else I have to tell you.”

“Okay,” she said, feeling a shiver of nervousness. This was serious.

He took a deep breath. “I think over the years, I have taken our friendship for granted. I just thought you would always be there. That we would always hang out, work together, go to the beach, celebrate life together.”

She’d always thought that too, and she felt her heart squeeze in response to his words.

“But this past week and a bit, without you. God, Mikayla, it was like someone had chopped off a limb. I’ve missed you so much.”

Her vision blurred with tears because she’d missed him too.

“And it made me realize exactly how much your friendship means to me. How much I don’t want to live without you, ever.”

The tears rolled down her cheeks because she didn’t want to live without him, either.

“Because the truth is this, Mikayla.” The glow in his eyes shot straight to her heart. “I love you. I love you so much. You are my best friend and my greatest love.”

She sobbed then. “Oh god, that’s so beautiful,” she all but wailed.

He raised his hands in amused exasperation. “Then why are you crying?”

“Because I’m scared.”

“What are you scared of?”

“That I’ll ruin it.”

“How?”

“Because I’ll be too clingy, and stupid and I’ll push you away.”

“But darling, I love you. I want you to cling. Desperately. I can’t get enough of you. I want you all over me, all the time. I want to marry you, have babies with you, grow old with you. I want you to cling so much that we become like the Berko brothers, and I carry you around on my back until our dying days, to the terror of women and children alike.”

Mikayla felt her heart bursting as she threw herself off the chair and into his lap. She wrapped her arms around his neck and buried her face in his shoulder. “That’s terrible, but also really romantic.”

“It is, isn’t it?” He said as he held her tight

“Oh god, have we just been really stupid?”
