“You weren’t into it, in the end.”

“Oh, well, that doesn’t really matter.”

He was quiet for so long that she flicked a glance at him, then away. There was heat in his gaze, but it wasn’t the warming sort. It was angry. “It matters to me.”

“Oh,” she said, not really sure how to process that.

“Let’s get one thing straight here. It’s no fun for me, if it’s no fun for you. Okay?”

She nodded, frowning.

“It breaks my heart that this is so confusing for you. When it comes to taking you to bed - I want to, whenever you want to. But never, if you don’t want to. Got it?”

“Right. Okay.” He wanted to. He definitely wanted to.

“Got it?” He repeated.

She looked at him then, directly in the eyes. “Yes. I got it.”

“Great. Glad we got that sorted. Now eat your mousse so I can kiss you again before I walk you home.”

CHAPTER EIGHT

Leah sensed, before she heard, Callum enter the Long House. Just a frisson of awareness; the hairs on the back of her neck, goosebumps along her arms, a slight breathlessness. She looked up, her eyes collided with his across the room and her heart turned over. Then he smiled at her and she thought it wouldn’t be a shock if she suddenly burst into flames. Just spontaneously combusted. Right there, next to her workstation.

She got to her feet as he walked over.

“You right to go?”

“Sure.” She grabbed her bag, waved to Juniper and followed Callum out the door. “I’m looking forward to getting my own car again,” she said as they crossed the car park to his truck.

“You don’t like my driving? Rude.”

“Ha ha. I like your driving just fine.” She stood by the passenger door. “I especially like it when you open the door for me.”

He looked over the bonnet at her. “Do you now?”

“I do.” She couldn’t take her eyes off him as he rounded the front of the car, pulling open her door, watching her the whole time. With the door open wide, she was trapped between him and the car, which was exactly what she wanted. She stepped close to him, so they were almost touching. A small smile curved her lips, her blood warming as he smiled in return. She pushed up to her tiptoes, put her hand on his chest, over his heart, for balance and pressed a kiss to his lips. He responded instantly, wrapping his arms around her, pulling her against him just like she wanted. She slid her hand up his chest, into his hair, opening her lips for him. The kiss turned hot quickly, turning her insides molten. She kissed him hungrily, like she was famished, biting back a moan when he pushed her against the car, holding her waist, his hands mere inches from her breasts.

He lifted his head. “Jesus, Leah, you kiss me like that again, we’ll be going nowhere fast.”

She grinned at him, quite proud of herself. “You like it.”

“I love it.” He bent his head to kiss her again, but gently this time, a featherlight touch with an edge of tenderness to it. “I’ve got something to show you.” He waited while she climbed into the car then closed the door behind her. “Dad checked out that car he was telling you about yesterday. It’s a goer.”

“Oh, yay. What was it again?”

“A Mazda.”

“That’s right. What color?”

“Blue,” he replied. “You don’t care about any of the other details?” He asked, in some amusement, when she didn’t ask any more questions.

“Nah, as long as she goes.” She grinned when he chuckled. Leah fell silent as she realized where they were going. Callum turned down the dirt track to her place. As the end of the drive opened up and she saw her house, she turned to Callum with a wide smile. “The roof’s all fixed!”

“Yep.”

“What’s that?” She pointed to a shipping container.
