“I’m much more mature than my sister.” His tone was comically pious.

“But you thought it.”

“I did.”

“I appreciate your self-restraint.” Leah could barely contain her laughter.

“Thank you.”

“Think I’ll go the cream tiles.”

“Probably a good idea,” Callum replied, taking that sample from her and putting it on the sideboard.

Leah pulled the box of kitchen counter samples closer. She spread them out, really undecided. “I’m not sure about these because I have no idea what I’ll do with the cupboards.” She tapped her forefinger to her lips thoughtfully, looking from the samples, across to the kitchen and back again. She felt a rush of excitement and gasped.

“Had some inspiration, have you?”

“Yes! Giverny!”

“Bless you.”

“Ha ha,” Leah said, rolling her eyes at him. “Monet’s garden, Giverny.”

“I need more information.”

“Claude Monet, impressionist painter.”

“I know who Monet is,” Callum said, laughing. “But what does his garden have to do with your kitchen counters?”

“Not his garden. His kitchen. It’s covered in this beautiful blue pattern. It would be too much for my little house, it’s very fussy. But if I chose plain white countertops, I could paint a similar pattern to Monet’s, only downsized. Then lacquer the doors so they are shiny.”

“Sounds great.” Callum moved the white counter sample over to the sideboard. “Kitchen tiles for the splash back, and you’re done.”

“Hmm, that’s a bit tricky.”

“Why?”

“Because tiles will break up the flow.”

“Oh, so you want glass, then?”

“Can I have that?” She asked uncertainly.

“Of course.”

“Really?”

“Yes, Leah. Really. I can arrange for a digital image to be printed onto it, if you like?”

Leah gasped. It was like all her Christmases had come at once. “So could I have the same image as the cupboards?”

“Yeah, you could.”

“Oh my god. Amazing. Let’s do that then.”

“Okay. I’ll let William know to get going on the doors, you make one up and I’ll send it down to Melbourne.”

“So good! Thank you.”
