Leah laughed. “Yeah, it was a good one.” She took another corn chip, crunching on it as she thought about everything that had happened. “I told him I wanted him to do it again. So he did.”

Mikayla sighed blissfully, then her eyes widened when Leah told them about telling Callum to fuck her.

“Do you think it’s possible that my brother has a magic penis?”

“Not just possible, but highly likely, I’d say,” Juniper said.

Although Leah laughed, she felt compelled to say, “It’s not that. I mean, obviously I know he doesn’t have a magic penis. But it wasn’t just that he knows what he’s doing. Like, really knows. It’s that he cares. I knew I could trust him, one hundred percent. He wouldn’t hurt me, or shame me, or make me do anything I didn’t want to do.”

Mikayla’s eyes glowed as she reached over and rubbed Leah’s arm affectionately. “I’m so happy for you. And I really love my brother.”

“So do I.” The words tumbled from her lips without any forethought whatsoever. Leah froze. Juniper grabbed her hand, giving it a squeeze. “Oh. Fuck.” Holding onto Juniper, she put her other hand over her heart, which was suddenly beating a painful tattoo. “You won’t tell him?”

“Of course not,” Mikayla and Juniper said at the same time.

“Okay. Good. Thank you.” She closed her eyes and breathed deeply. “Because I don’t know what it means. I don’t even know if it’s real.”

“We get it,” Juniper said reassuringly. “And we’re here if you need to talk about it.”

“Thanks. Both of you.”

“Do you need a change of subject?”

“Yes.”

“Good, because I’ve got a doozy.” Mikayla reached down for her handbag. Leah glanced at Juniper, confused, as Mikayla stayed ducked under the table. Juniper shrugged. Then Mikayla straightened grinning from ear to ear as she held her hand out. An antique amethyst ring adorned the third finger of her left hand. It was Leah’s turn to squeal. Juniper joined her.

“Mikayla! You sat there and let me go on and on about Callum when you had this news!” Leah said when they’d all settled down.

Mikayla grinned. “I was planning on telling Mum and Dad first, but then I couldn’t help myself. I’m hopeless.”

“Tell us everything!” Juniper said, grabbing a napkin and dabbing at her eyes.

Leah smiled as Mikayla’s eyes turned dreamy. “It started off with me nesting.”

“Jeez, Mik, you only moved in yesterday,” Leah said, pouring water into their glasses from the carafe in the middle of the table.

“Thanks,” Mikayla said, taking a sip and staring off into space for a moment. “I know. But with us staying together at my place, and then the renovations at Ra — our place — looking so good, I just feel really clucky.” She paused, giving Leah a look.

“It’s okay. You can talk about it. I’m excited for you.”

Mikayla blinked rapidly, trying to hold back tears. “You’re such a sweet friend. I wish…” She let the words hang in the air. There weren’t enough words to encompass the wishes Mikayla had for Leah.

“I know. Me too.” Leah swallowed the lump in her throat. “I want you to promise me something.”

“What’s that?” Mikayla asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Leah leaned forward and grabbed Mikayla’s hand. “When you do find out you’re pregnant, I want you to bounce into my house, full of all of your excitement and happiness and tell me. I’ll be so thrilled for you. And Rafe. So no holding back because you’re worried about upsetting me. Okay?”

Mikayla nodded wordlessly, her eyes shining with tears.

“Good. Now enough tears.” Leah glanced at Juniper, sitting across the table from her, her eyes also brimming with tears. “Oh Jesus, not you, too.” She passed them both napkins. “I don’t want any more tears about this. I’ve shed enough. Got it?” They both looked at her, unable to speak. “Got it?” She demanded.

Juniper took a shaky breath. “Got it. I love you.”

Leah smiled then. “I love you, too. Mikayla?”

“Yeah, I’ve got it.” She wiped her face. “I love you.”
