“I love you, too. Now tell us how it went down last night.” Seeing the gleam in Mikayla’s eyes, Leah hastily added, “Went down with the proposal, Mik, not anything either of you did afterwards.”

Mikayla chuckled. “Spoil sport.”

CHAPTER TWELVE

Callum heard Mikayla’s bouncing step on the front porch of the unit. He rolled his eyes. If he knew his sister, this was a fishing expedition. Leah had mentioned that she was catching up with Juniper and Mikayla that afternoon. This sisterly visit was not unexpected.

“Hey,” she stepped inside the door without knocking. Her eyes widened when she saw him, sitting on the couch with his guitar. “One hot shag and you’re already back to your music?”

“Jesus, Mik.”

“Coffee or tea? I’m having tea.”

“Sure, tea’s fine.”

He heard her moving about the kitchen behind him, flicking the kettle on, opening the cupboards, then the only sound in the unit was the kettle boiling. “Sooooo,” she said after a long while.

He didn’t turn to look at her, just toyed with the strings of his guitar, testing it.

“You know I just caught up with Leah, yeah?”

“Yeah.” He heard her pour the water into the mugs, stir the spoon, the clatter of her dropping the spoon into the sink. Then she was placing his cup of tea on the low coffee table. “Mik!”

“Callum!” She said, sitting down, her eyes shining as she looked at him. She leaned back against the couch, resting her chin in her hand so that her engagement ring was prominent. “Notice anything different about me?”

“You’ve had your nails done?”

“Bastard.”

He put the guitar down and pulled her into his arms. “I’m so happy for you.”

“Thanks.”

“Got any wedding plans yet?”

“Vague ones. I haven’t told Mum and Dad. I’m meeting Rafe here to break the news but they’re not home. I probably should have told them first, hey? But I saw your car and couldn’t help myself. I’ve already told Leah and Juniper, even though I promised myself I wouldn’t. But Leah —”

“Leah?” He prompted when she didn’t continue, a stricken look in her eyes. “Is Leah okay?” She’d been more than okay when he’d left her that morning.

“Yeah, she’s fine. Really good, actually. She just needed a distraction from a bit of a heavy topic.”

He watched her for a moment, but she returned his gaze openly. “Good.”

“And now that we’re back onto the topic of Leah…”

Callum braced himself but Mikayla didn’t say anything, just looked at him, an unreadable expression on her face.

“Now that we’re on the topic of Leah?”

“Nothing.”

“Nothing?”

“Nothing.”

“Are you feeling alright? Do I need to call Rafe? Get you an ambulance? A therapist?”

She smiled at him but her eyes were serious. “You’re a good man, Callum John Sinclair.”
