He rolled his eyes.
“Don’t roll your eyes. It’s true and I love you for it.”
“I love you, too. Which segues nicely into something else I want to talk to you about.”
“Sounds serious.”
“What are these vague wedding plans you’ve got?”
Mikayla frowned, perplexed, then shrugged. “Well, vague, as I said. I’d love to get married on the beach if we do it at the right time of year. We haven’t even set a date. Plus, I could be pregnant by then, so I don’t know what I’ll feel up to doing.”
He gave a start of surprise, then felt a warm glow in his heart. “Is that so?”
“Yeah, that’s so. You ready to be Uncle Cal?”
“I sure am.”
“Awesome.”
“I want to ask you a favor.”
“Go for it.”
“I want you to let me pay for the wedding.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“No.”
“Mikayla.”
“Callum.”
He blew out a breath. She could do this all day, he knew. He rubbed his hand over his face, trying to pull his thoughts together. Trying to find an argument to convince her to say yes. “Mik, you know I’m absolutely loaded —”
“I don’t care.”
“I know you don’t. It’s one of the things I love the most about you.” He looked down at his hands, loosely clasped in his lap. “I don’t really want to get into the details right now, but I felt a bit shattered when I came home.”
“I’m aware.”
“Right. So all the money, fame and success…it feels empty and meaningless to me right now. What feels really meaningful to me is you, and Mum and Dad. Everyone, really. Just being home, hanging out with you and Rafe, working with Dad. It makes me feel…better, I guess.”
“I see.”
He flicked a glance at her. She was watching him very closely. If he said the next part exactly right, he knew she’d let him pay for the wedding. “I want to do this because I want to give you back some of what you give me. And you don’t need anything else. It would really mean a lot to me, Mik.”
“Oh, well, when you put it like that…” She said, her voice thick with emotion. “I’ll talk to Rafe about it.”
“Good. Do that. And one more thing.”
“God, what now?”
