Leah rolled her eyes. “You didn’t ask to meet me so we could talk about the scorching hot sex I’m having. What do you want?”

“I need you to talk to Quinn.”

“Who?” Leah asked, frowning.

“Don’t play dumb,” Scott snapped. “Your bitch of a friend.”

Leah searched her mind. “Ge…Georgie?” She asked uncertainly.

“Yes. She’s going to bankrupt me and I need you to stop her.”

Totally confused now, Leah said, “How is Georgie going to bankrupt you?”

“She’s suing me.”

“What for?”

“Building collapse.”

Leah froze as an icy sliver of dread curled in her gut. “Georgie was in the Victoria Apartments?” A pet project of Scott’s, the Victoria Apartments was supposed to be his greatest achievement. He’d joined a consortium of developers and volunteered to oversee the building construction. This turned out to be a piece of catastrophic overreach that had resulted in death and injury. He simply had not possessed the skills to see a project like that to proper completion. Always budget conscious, he had cut costs relentlessly. He’d had to bribe a City planner to have the building approved for occupancy. It was right around that time that he’d started seeing Kikki. She gave him the comfort he needed, apparently. The sex with her helped him deal with the stress, he’d said. Then she told him she was pregnant, and that was that. Marriage over.

“She was. She’s already sued the consortium. She got a massive insurance payout to cover all the surgeries.”

“S-surgeries?” Leah asked, horror struck.

Scott ignored her interruption. “But she’s suing me personally. My lawyer says my case is shaky. He doesn’t even know about the bribes and if that ever came out, I’m done for.” He was rattling on now, almost oblivious to Leah’s presence. “If she wins, I’ll be completely bankrupt. Kikki’s already said she’ll leave me if that happens.” He stopped, pushing his fingers through his hair, looking at Leah with a plea in his eyes. “I need you to stop her.”

Leah was reeling. She took a deep breath. “Let me get this straight. You built a shoddy, cheap building that wasn’t up to code. Then you bribed a council planner to get it approved. It collapsed, gravely injuring an old friend of mine. A friend that you despised and told me to get rid of. You made it so hard for me to be friends with her that I had to let her go. Now you want me to hit her up on your behalf to stop her from suing your greedy, incompetent ass?”

“It’s not like that!”

“It’s exactly like that. And you can get fucked.” She turned to go, stopped short at the feel of his fingers, wrapping vice-like around her upper arm. He spun her back to him, his eyes blazing with all the fury of a mediocre, nasty man who was finally getting what he deserved. He raised his hand as though to hit her and Leah flinched, bracing herself for contact.

“Hey!” The sound of a metal chair crashing to the ground reverberated down the street. Leah and Scott turned. Mikayla stormed down the sidewalk like a warrior queen, her flame-colored hair flying behind her, her brown eyes ablaze. She was there in a flash, gripping Scott’s shirtfront in tight fists and shoving him hard against the wall of the nearby building. “Listen, you ugly fuckhead. You lay a hand on my friend again, I will rip your dick off and shove it so far up your ass you’ll be pissing out your mouth.” Her voice vibrated with fury. “You get me?” Scott was completely speechless, nodding frantically, his bottom lip quivering as he tried to speak. “You get me?” Mikayla repeated. Then she cocked her head to one side, sniffing. Stepping back hastily, she looked down. Scott sagged against the wall, looking like he was about to faint. “Oh holy Jesus fucking Christ. He’s pissed himself!” Then she added the final insult to Scott’s humiliation by letting out a peal of laughter. “Jeez, Kaplan, would you look at that.”

Juniper came up next to Leah, taking hold of her trembling hand.

In an effort to reclaim even a shred of dignity, Scott pushed away from the wall, glaring at Mikayla. “I’ll go to the police about this. I’ll have you charged.”

“Charged with what? You pissed yourself, mate. I’d be more than happy to sit in front of a cop, and a judge, for that matter, and tell them exactly how this came about.” She flicked a scornful glance at Scott’s crotch. “But something tells me that will be much harder for you than it will be for me.”

“What’s going on here?” Leah turned to see Callum, William and Rafe crossing the street. “I said, what’s going on here?” William repeated, coming to stand next to Juniper.

“This is Leah’s ex. He tried to assault her. I told him not to. He pissed himself.” Mikayla gestured to Scott, the urine stain spreading over his tailored shorts.

“He pissed himself?” Rafe asked, lips twitching. “Just like that?”

“Sort of,” Mikayla said, her eyes dancing. “I’ll fill you in later. But for now, we’re done here.” She turned back to Scott. “Don’t forget what I said.”

He shot a look at Leah. She straightened her shoulders, overwhelmingly grateful when she felt Callum’s arm slide around her waist and pull her close to him. Seeing the contact, Scott pulled at the hem of his shirt, clearing his throat, about to say something.

“Don’t start talking, mate. We’re done. Off you fuck.” When Scott hesitated, Mikayla stepped forward. He back pedaled, knocking into a scooter before hurrying off down the street, walking with his legs out to accommodate his wet pants.

“That…that was amazing,” Juniper said breathlessly.

Leah closed her eyes. “I just want to take a moment to have the memory of the last few minutes burned into my brain.”

“I need a drink,” Mikayla said, grinning from ear to ear. “Turns out making a man piss himself is thirsty work.”
