“Har har.”

“He hasn’t been serious about anyone since you guys broke up.”

She shrugged. “He had his chance. It’s just that…”

“It’s just that?”

“I miss him. And I hate myself for it.”

He squeezed her hand. “Why don’t you get in touch?”

She shook her head vehemently. “No way. I’m not going to go begging for scraps.”

“Fair enough.”

The waiter returned and took their orders.

“But seriously, enough about me. I really do want to hear all about whatever it is you’ve got going on that requires the duping of rabid paparazzi.”

He filled her in.

“Do you think it’ll work?”

“I hope so. The last thing I want is a bunch of guys following Leah everywhere she goes.”

Diane narrowed her eyes, looking at him for a long moment. “Like that, is it?”

He shifted uncomfortably, trying to suppress his instinctive reaction, which was to deflect. “Yeah. I care about her.”

“Hm, well, I call bullshit on that. I think you more than care about her. Want to know how I know?”

“Sure,” he replied, but only because he knew she was going to tell him anyway.

“How hot am I?”

“Very.”

“Exactly,” she said triumphantly.

“I don’t get it.”

“Well, as per your request, I have been laying it on pretty thick since you got here. I’m touching you, I’m batting my eye lashes at you. I just leaned forward on the table to show you my cleavage. And what did you do?”

He shook his head. He had no idea.

“You didn’t even take a quick squizz. Not even a glance. This rack is amazing.” She gestured to her breasts, a self-deprecating smile curving her lush lips. “I know this because I paid a lot of money to make it so. But you couldn’t give a shit. You’ve got it bad, Callum Sinclair. I’m looking forward to the engagement announcement.”

His heart leapt at her words, catching him by surprise. “Shut up.” She laughed. Callum was relieved when their meals arrived and Diane let it go.

A few hours later, stretched out on the sofa bed in Diane’s downstairs loungeroom, Callum reached for his phone. They’d been tailed from the restaurant to Diane’s place, stopping on her front porch to kiss. “Jesus, it’s like kissing my brother,” Diane had said as she turned the key in the lock of her front door.

Callum sent Leah a text.

Callum:Mission accomplished, I think.

His heart tightened when he saw the three dots appear, showing that Leah was typing a message.

Leah:That’s great. Dinner went well then?
