He scratched his head, not sure how to say what he wanted to say.

Callum:Yeah, Diane played it up perfectly. We kissed, just so you know. For the cameras.

Leah:We haven’t made any promises to each other, Callum. It’s fine.

What thehelldid she mean by that? He had no idea how to respond. He saw the three dots appear. They stopped, then started up again. He found his heart beating heavily, making him uncomfortable.

Leah:But just so you know, someone was kissing me tonight too…For the camera.

Callum felt a surge of anger. What the fuck? He was about to ring her when a photo popped up in the text. He burst out laughing. She was lying in bed with Bluebell next to her. Bluebell, on her back with her paws in the air, was licking Leah’s cheek. Leah’s face was all scrunched up and she was laughing. A second photo came through. This one had Bluebell looking at the camera, her tongue lolling out and one paw reaching for the phone. Leah was smiling, her dark hair spread out on the pillow, her eyes soft. She was pure loveliness

Callum:Why is Bluebell on my pillow?

Leah:Because she misses you. Your mum texted to say she was pining, so I went and got her. The bonus is that she doesn’t snore as much as you.

Callum:Har har. I don’t snore.

Leah:Sure sure.

Callum:I’m meeting up with the guys tomorrow night, but after that, my business here is done. I’ll be back on the thirty first.

Leah:Lovely.

Callum:Good night xx

Leah:xx

He put his phone down on the coffee table and lay there for the longest time. Just staring up at the ceiling. We haven’t made any promises to each other, Callum.Fuck.

???

Callum pulled up in Leah’s drive as the sun was almost setting on New Year’s Eve. He was disappointed to see that her car wasn’t there. He could hear Bluebell barking inside so he sent Leah a quick text and let himself in to the house. He let Bluebell out of the bathroom, heading straight outside so she could run off the crazy. His phone beeped and he snatched it out of his back pocket, expecting a reply from Leah. It was Diane.

Diane:Guess who just visited me?

Callum:Who?

Diane:As if you don’t already know. Jackson. He came bearing mea culpas galore.

Callum:That’s great!

Diane:Lol. Don’t act like you didn’t send him.

Callum:I didn’t send him. I caught up with him last night. He wasn’t too happy to see me. Maybe because there are pictures of you and me all over the place. I told him to pull his head out of his ass. If he still had feelings for you, he should tell you.

Diane:Well, he did.

Callum smiled.

Callum:And?

Diane:We’re going to take it a day at a time.

Callum:I’m happy for you. And thanks for helping me out.

Diane:I’d say any time, but Jackson might have something to say about that. Good luck with your Leah.

His Leah. Callum took a deep breath.
